Re: What is this please

a carving and marking of a registered vessel ( probably British) this is the Official Number ON of the vessel and the registered tonnage RT; originally the volume of space within the hull and enclosed space on deck measured by the number of barrels it could carry. 5 tons and 26 hundred weights I believe.

And here in Australia at least, it should have been carved into a permanent bit of the boat, such as a deck beam. Should not be removable.

Re: What is this please

On mine -British Flag - it is on a board screwed onto a bulkhead in a locker... don't have no deck beams.... possibly the norm on GRP boats of a certain age...

yes that is the way it was done in the good old days. The MCA some time ago decided it wasn't feasible to carve into GRP now days a plaque like the one in the picture is acceptable for part one registration.

Re: What is this please

We have a mid 80’s steel boat and I can find no numbers anywhere.

Suggestions welcome.

Was it even required back then?

it would depend how it was registered what level of registration and on what Flag she sailed. Many boats do not have this marking as they were never used commercially or the Flag jurisdiction didn't require it because of the size or usage. In some countries they have a different and less onerous form of registration or licensing for pleasure craft.

I believe it was a 'tun' or barrel of 100 cubic feet... so interior volume 526 cubic feet. Probably about a 32 foot boat... 32 x 10 x 2 x.8 .... = 5 12/100

Here in Oz it still has to be carved in. See page 14...

Re: What is this please

Not all long ago..... I knew the people who had the wooden boat place in Victoria Dock , Melb,Vic, Oz....
They were building a gondola for some bloke to ply for hire and reward with on the Yarra...
Marine Board of Vic said.. 30 foot (?) wooden boat ... must have 6" x 8" hardwood keel......

And do not talk to me about trying to put an AWB into MBofV survey for sailing school work on Port Phillip...

NSW was much the same.....

I could give other examples....

Re: What is this please

Funny though, I figured these kinda of internationally relevant rules would be standardised. I mean, let’s face it, that bit of plywood is pretty easily transferred to another boat. I actually think the AMSA rule makes a bit of sense.

But yeah, state rules in Oz are bizarre.

Re: What is this please

It could be from another country but the number 713302 does show up in USCG documentation as a commercial fishing vessel
