combination of 2 waves caused this. Wave prior set the opportunity for second one. One can see them coming. What i ve done in this situation is to turn away from wind so take these waves more on the beam. That works well if not breaking which is the case here. If breaking quick tack is in order or if seen early escape by slowing or speeding.

here you go, same setup, just different scale

https://youtu.be/_akyfMp9ln8

in this sailing boat should turn with the waves, in my opinion around 20 degrees behind the beam. Keep speed , ability to tack, so one can avoid worst. At night pitch dark.... no idea - have not tried yet.

I see that. When I'm on the Soling in the harbor with civilians on board, I'll use that first approach with large powerboat wakes; you kind of ride over the first one then go parallel to the second, like a surfer. The thing is, you can predict the frequency of powerboat wakes.

I think in these particular conditions, rather than tack, I'll take the water, as long as everyone's secure in the cockpit and the companionway is buttoned up. Then again, the Bavaria doesn't have a self-tacking jib.

I'm pretty sure I'm not trying to sail into the waves in this video in any case.

Re: What, really, is a rogue wave?

Van Dorn’s “ Oceanography and Seamanship”, a fairly concise and detailed examination of phenomena encountered in the oceans describes a rogue wave as one occurring when peaks of two or more wave trains traveling at different speeds coincide. Which is why waves of seemingly unusual size can happen on even fairly small bodies of water in not so storm-like conditions. When several wave trains get together in one spot that’s when things happen, limited by depth of water.

sometimes you may just have to turn into it, hang on, and duck.

I would turn into it and let my bow rise up the face . And if i do take water on deck well thats why i have a flush deck, foulies, and a dodger

Re: What, really, is a rogue wave?

We had to deliver a charter yacht back to base and there was a gale, we had sailed n them before. We had a rogue wave, as we got to the top of it we could see there was nothing behind it so we held on. The water came up to the mast. We were lucky the forehatch wasn't torn off otherwise we would have sunk.

That guy is one of the best.

He never stops smiling. Even when he's seasick.

About the point where he builds a birdhouse, I was thinking, he gets it.

The other one I really like is this guy:

So matter of fact. It's like my dad used to talk to us.
