That would be a misinterpretation. Both Virginia and Maryland occasionally run "specials" where they are looking for registrations. They will ask for proof you have been out of state within the period (I've been stopped and asked). pretty much any receipt in your wallet will do, but not just a registration in the adjacent state, because the rates are much different (common scam).


If you are going to honor the time limits, keep a log during the passage and keep fuel / marina tickets. No worries. They're not out to get cruisers, just trying to catch scammers.

Virginia also has personal property tax in some counties. They walk the docks looking for scofflaws.
