Where to Refit in the Eastern Med

Anyone have knowledge or experience with regards to where the best and least expensive place to refit a sailboat in the eastern Med? Looking to do most of the work ourselves and cost is a priority. Projects will include standing rigging, through hulls, electronics, importing equipment if it makes sense....I think you get the idea. Turkey, Cyprus, Greece, Malta????

Any insight would be appreciated

Thanks

Turkey is a good option for most refits

We had a lot done in Kusadasi and the workmanship was excellent and the prices very good, I think its one of the more reasonable places in Turkey to have work done.

The Greek Island Paros has a very good all around guy there that does good work at reasonable rates. It depends of course on what you needed done and how long you have to do it.

We have twice had work undertaken in Turkey. Marmaris has several yards close together. This gives you the option of getting a number of quotes whilst staying in one place. Another benefit is having many chandleries to choose from. Just outside Marmaris are further marina's where you have less choice but cheaper hard standing. We also had work undertaken (new hard top bimini and hull repairs) done in Kyrenia, Northern Cyprus - the cost there was really reasonable and anything they have not got can be obtained without much delay from the Turkish mainland. Good luck.....

Marmaris is excellent. We got new sails and rigging UK sails, great loft; in the Sanai? area where all work is done e.g. steel work, repairs etc, easy to find if you ask. we found good steel work; canvas work good . Electrical are a problem due to tax on parts. Greece is probably better for parts being EU, can order from there e.g. UK and pick up on nearby islands e.g. Kos or Rhodes. Marmaris has wonderful area, called by locals Chandlery Road, near Netsal Marina. West Marine in Marmaris ok. Can recommend a few suppliers too if you like to contact us directly. We are now in Croatia, permanent live aboard on our Bowman 40.

If you need cheap places to haul, Bozburan has boat yards. Security ok, slap and dash hauling but cheap- as Turkey is getting dearer. Marmaris is a bus ride away, depends on your budget really.

Hi I'm currently based in Fethiye in the south of Turkey, I find that you can get virtually any type of work carried out here. I use an English guy called Gareth to look after my boat, extremely reliable and trustworthy, he can organise anything. You can contact him by email g.thegreenroom@btconnect.com I hope this helps, also costs are not outrageous ⚓️⛵️⚓️

Might be too far west for you, but we leave our boat in an excellent clean, secure shipyard in Olbia, Sardinia which allows us to do all the work ourselves. Plenty of great services and high quality personnel and chandleries close by.

re: Where to Refit in the Eastern Med

I have just moved my boat to the Island of Aigina . There are a number of lift out yards on the north shore which are very reasonable . lift out - wash- winter for 10 x months - and launch , for a 47 ft yacht all in at Euro 2000.00

Access by ferry to Piraeus is excellent and virtually all the spares and equipment in Greece are sourced through Piraeus .

Flights into Athens also cut out the extra leg and costs , to the other Islands .

Hope this helps .

Regards Garth

Garth,
Thanks for the info.
Sounds great. I'm in Corfu right now and the haul out for winter storage is expensive.
What is the name of the yard? I will call.
Island of Aegina looks very well located.
Cheers
George

Yup! I have an idea, and it's maybe one that never crossed your mind. Turkey!

I have a house in Ano Glyfada, Greece, and nothing wrong with a Greek refit, but have you been watching the news? How many people can you fit on your boat? Go to Turkey and make a dozen or so round-trip ferry runs to Lesbos. The reported going fare is $1,300 US a head. If you do enough trips you can probably just buy a new boat. Cool stuff, huh?
