Re: Which is best boat for ocean passages?

If you can find a boat equipped for an ocean passage when bought, it would be a great buy. The previous owner probably died before he could cast off the lines and his widow is in the mood to dump the boat because she was never all that invested in the trip in the first place. Analogous to this is the fact that you can buy a nice motor home really cheap in January - March in Arizona - just because old geezers drive out of the the cold to hang out in the warm deserts around Quartzite, AZ and have a heart attack from the unusual exercise common to walking around the desert. The wife can't drive the huge bus and just sells it for whatever she can get on the way to the airport to return to the family in Wisconsin. Dozens of motor homes are nearly given away like this every year. There is an active business in Arizona that hires out drivers just to return the motor homes of dead guys to the cold northern tier states. With sailboats, old guys dream of a world cruise and spend a lot of money and hard work (that can kill an old guy like me) getting ready. The last-minute rush to prepare for departure stresses the old guy and he croaks. His passing may leave a perfectly good boat for sale at a rock-bottom price. But, on the positive side, the previous owner died chasing his dream. Not a bad way to go.

A spectacular choice. One of the prettiest boats ever built. Keep us updated as to your travels. While some of us our skeptics of your time frame, there is nothing I'd like more than to hear you succeeded in your dream.

The closest landfall is NEVER more than half the distance to the planned destination, and usually MUCH less.

Great vessel, I delivered one of these back to Seattle from Hawaii and later from Mexico to San Diego. The first day out once we cleared the islands we covered 224 miles over the ground on a close reach and did it in comfort. It's a powerful boat in those conditions and you will need a good rig.

Opinions please on which of the following is NOT suitable from sailors who have actually completed such passages in the last 15 years.
No need for sofa sailor opinions.
Moody 42CC, Fredom42CC, Hunter Passage 42/45, Morgan 45, Beneteau 44CC, Brewer 44CC, Tayana 42CC.

I know it's a long list but we are looking at these over the next 2 weeks, hoping to select, survey, and buy immediately. What do we remove from our list ?
Thanks,
Don

Get rid of them all except the Tayana 42CC. That's the one you need.

If you are bad-a$$ enough to pull something like that off, you don't need an Internet opinion on which boat to select.

Re: Which is best boat for ocean passages?

Back again , I have read several posts about timing in respect to your hurricane season, all very valid .
However something just came to mind remembering Christmas of 82 in Cabo I was there and one very large storm ( ? Hurricane) kicked the heck out of the bay putting a dozen or more boats permanently on the beach .
ATM I am planning a two to three day coastal trip on the cusp of our southern ocean winter fronts , I am using a marvellous Wind predictor App called WINDY.
Maybe the guy could do passages with care to when the next hurricane could hit sometimes months apart .
I have little knowledge of frequency of bolt holes available along your West Coast but it could be doable ?.
My last boat was purchased within an hour off the mooring within 2 weeks and we sailed 6000 miles to within sight of Burma , fitted some niceties along the way, We did leave at the end of the Queensland cyclone season tho .

Not noted as the best of breed but I know some people who own a Legend 45 that sailed across the Atlantic twice.

Have you ever looked at the Beneteau Idylle series? Go anywhere in the world in thosein comfort and safety. Stout fast Frers designed boats.
