I get the trailer bearing analogy, but it’s really not valid.

Hot trailer hubs create a vacuum when placed into cool water. So there is a negative pressure pulling saltwater into the fully submerged hub.

Do you hang your furler in salt water permanently?

Anyway, I’m happy with the profurl product. The new Harkens have really little to recommend them in terms of amount of plastic components used especially in the tropics.

Schaefer is certainly my #2 recommendation, but I struggle to justify the cost. But I rarely come across a cruising customer that is very worried about more than 10 years of owners and that’s the profurl warranty. Most cats seem to change hands every 3-4 years with each owner hoping to pass the major refit on to the next owner!

I race in LIS in the summer. Certainly a different market.
