Thanks for the added insight, Dan. I still don't buy the argument that he didn't see the surfers before he reach the point of no return, but that's just speculation. I gather though that although the channel south of the pier is used frequently by local sailors, it's not marked, it's narrow and it's dangerous - if one chooses to flaunt the danger for whatever thrill it provides, or whatever time it shaves off the trip, then he better have his head in the game. Fortunately it didn't this time, but 'complacency kills'.
