Re: You Tuber Sinks

Their Twitter account and various YouTube comments indicate that a through-hull was the source of the water ingress.

That makes the most sense and would be my guess. Don't know how you would guard against, either, other than check, check, and recheck. It's a shame, too.

Re: You Tuber Sinks

Their videos have been almost a nonstop litany of "what not to do" over the past two years, and they had very little if any experience before acquiring this boat. I'm not sure that they knew enough to really keep any eye on their thru hulls. Of course, the failure may not have been something that could have been anticipated or spotted in advance, but that's pretty rare.

Don't get me wrong...they are a nice couple and very straightforward about making mistakes when they do, and they have clearly learned a lot. I'm not accusing them of bad judgement...just plain ignorance of the importance of monitoring and maintaining thru hulls.

I hope they get back on the water, although some cryptic comments at the end of their last video hinted that might not be in the cards. That would be a shame.

I see so many new vbloggers that don't have a clue about preventive maintenance. Nothing happens until something breaks.

Re: You Tuber Sinks

Thru hulls are just plain scary.

I have had two of the marelon ones break off, and thats why I have bungs tied to every through hull.

Both of the marelon failures involved small size through hulls and there was only a gentle bump of the hand that sheared them off.

It's probably a good idea to give through hulls some type of a stress test at least once a year when you are in the boatyard to identify potential failures that could sink your boat.

Was it the though hull that sheered or the valve/seacock? Which type where they?

Of course it can, but there's obviously stuff you can do to minimize the risk. Maintaining and inspecting thru hulls is pretty high up on that list.

As for Marelon...not on my boat, at least below the the waterline. I have a few above (propane locker drain, cockpit scuppers) and on two of them the external flanges FELL OFF despite being an integral part of the thru hull. That does not happen with bronze...

Also know someone with some below the waterline ones. Sheared one off with her foot when in a cockpit locker. Luckily it was on the hard...

The problem w tied off wooden bungs is that they are made of wood so they will swell when wet and help seal the hole. Often those tied in place, like in bilge, are already wet and therefore less effective.

Ive found them which were almost rotten...not much good.

Mine are stowed in zip lock bags to keep them dry. Not tied on.

Re: You Tuber Sinks

The biggest problem with any bung is when you are not there to put them in the thru hull that has failed. That's my fear, and exactly what happened to Wicked Salty.

Another quick plug is a Nerf football or basketball. They compress and conform to the hole easily. Not great for longterm, but handy to have at the "Oh $#!)" moment.

perhaps negative buoyancy?
