Re: Your boat's name

"Kharon"...named after the Greek ferryman of the dead. Our interpretation is that it is transporting us to a better place, not that we wish to be dead.

Phonetically: Kilo...Hotel...Alpha...Romeo...Oscar...November

Re: Your boat's name

Our boat's name is Neko - its the Japanese word for cat, which is what the boat is. A sistership had a cute name - Willy Flippit. Its dinghy was Betty Wont. Our previous boat was named after my favorite movie character - Quint.

Re: Your boat's name

Boat names are interesting. They range from the boring, to the silly, to the extremely clever, to funny, whimsical and completely mysterious. Some are in bad taste.. others become almost mythical. And most have some sort of meaning attached to them.

Re: Your boat's name

Ours is going to be called Ashiki. Means passion in swahili apparently. The SWMBO chose it so I'm sticking with it. Probably will be a pain over the VHF, time will tell.

Also, I thought tenders are supposed to have the same name as the mothership, so to avoid needing registration. Maybe I have it wrong..

Re: Your boat's name

If you have a good since of humor I'd go with "Honkey Dory." It appears to have a nautical theme. Here is what the Urban Dictionary says about it:
honky dory

Originated by post WW II US Sailors on liberty in Yokosuka, Japan. The strip right outside the main gate to the US Naval Base was called (and still is) Honcho Dori (means book district street in Japanese). Times were wild and there was no better sailor port in the world at the time. This was bastardized to Honky Dory by the sailors and it came to mean if you came from Honky Dory then everything had to be good or 'honky dory'.

What would be extremely lovely is if you'd actually paint the name on the boat (fore and aft) in plain font large enough to be easily seen!

Mine's called Seaweed 'cause she sort of grows on you. She's not sleek and fast, and, well, the name suited me. There are lists online with boat names -- however note that the common names "Voyager" and "Wind Catcher" come to mind, well, in a crowded anchorage you'd want a name that is unique to you for VHF calls and such.

One of the best I saw was on a center console; it was called "Job Site" and, well, it just tickled me. Every time I saw it there were a couple fellows aboard with fishing gear, hard at work no doubt.

Enjoy your Dory...

I see "4 Play" in the boatyard all the time, also "X-Rated" on race boats, and all sorts of other terribly sleazy names too. Not just bad names, but in bad taste. The other day there was a big boat in the yard named "Penetrator". Talk about over compensation! Last summer at Friday Harbor a boat with a similar name kept getting sent to the back of the waiting list for a slip as we all circled around outside waiting for slips. His boat name was highly offensive, and every time he got on the radio and repeated it several times, I could hear the dock tenders distaste as she told him to wait some more. They are mostly all young ladies up there. It was hilarious!

Re: Your boat's name

Our new boat came as Kraken, which I like and we've kept.

When renaming our last boat some good advice was to make sure you can say it threes times in a row fast in case you ever call mayday.

There's a sailboat around here called "Proceeds of Crime".
Belongs to a lawyer.

I've seen a boat around here called Never Again IV. I thought it was pretty funny.

Re: Your boat's name

Had a few names on my boats "Uproar" (Can't pronounce that in many countries) "Explosion" (really interesting when calling on the VHF) and now Emmalina after my daughter... I think you should find your own name not ask other people. I hate it when people have the II III IV etc no originality in that.

Re: Your boat's name

I've owned:

Dinghies: Indigo, Captain Haddock, Alphonse, Blade, Flesh for Fantasy, Ovation, Fantasy Too.

Cruisers: Razorback, Calpurnia, another Calpurnia (as it's Latin, sign written with a V rather than a U), Moby Dick (POS owned for about six months), Fixation and finally Sestina.

Please not Wind Dancer, Wind Song, Wet Dream, etc.
