Re: All Cyclone Pam threads merged to here

Pete, all, any news from Justin or anyone at the boatyard will be appreciated. My yacht is up on the hard stand there "cyclone proof" but anything can happen in a Cat 5. Just checked my insurance -- Cat 5 named storms have a specific exclusion.

That long narrow inlet just E of the harbour - is it navigable? Looks like a fine cover from bad storms but the entry looks shallow on Google Earth.

Any news from our special envoy? How did they do?

b.
That inlet is not navigable, neither is the channel between the outer and inner harbour S of the island.

The floating boat that seems to have risen out the storm appears to be a cat.

Sad for all those monohulls. But seriously it's a sad day my for a lot of people. People's boating dreams and homes destroyed and all the land dwellers who have lost homes and even life. Very very sad.

Its mast is down. If not unscathed, it certainly seems to have survived much better:

To me it looks like the stern is high and the bow low, even submerged.

I thought that at first also but if you look closely you can see the whole boat. You can see the bow just under the radar of the 2nd boat at the dock.

Re: All Cyclone Pam threads merged to here

yep, 45 knots (windspeed, not gusts) at Tiri Tiri island now, and rising. couple of miles from here. reports of 70 in bay of islands so far....
I hope pete is ok - nothing from vanuatu for some time, but most comms are down. reports saying up to 90% of port vila buildings destroyed. possibly the pacifics largest recorded cyclone event...
supposed to pass E of here tonight.

City sensors show 20 gusting 30. Where did you measure 60? Maybe there is a street canyon or something where you live. Wind tends to funnel and accelerate between tall buildings.

Bay of Islands got 30 knots for a time. Auckland got less. I think Hicks Bay area will get whatever they will get (the forecast says 45). We will see.

Yep. Good speed and then look at the diameter. And then at associated sea state.

Too bad all this new found knowledge will be forgotten as soon as we get another 'catamaran speed as a safety factor' thread hanging around ...

;-)

Anyways, the fast(-est) and best crewed PROFESSIONAL boats of VOR elected to dodge rather than to escape.

Re: All Cyclone Pam threads merged to here

There was pieces of a Cat shown on the news last night. I guess vanuatu got 160+ winds.
