Anchoring in Townsville

Is it possible and permissible to hang off the pick in the Townsville area or is it best to anchor at Magnetic Island and commute for shopping etc.

I notice google earth shows some sort of open breakwater arrangement near the port.
Is this a current picture and suitable anchorage.
Where does one dinghy ashore to.

Have 10 meter catamaran.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Anchoring in Townsville

Hi Slugo,
I am quoting from an excellent publication called "Cruising the Coral Coast " by Alan Lucas a well know and highly respected yachtie. An anchorage does exist under the lee of the western breakwater also known as the Duck Pond. It quickly shoals but has excellent holding in what is described as tenacious mud.
As per the book, dinghy access to the mainland is available through the nearby marina for a daily landing rate or at the nearby beach adjacent the nearby sailing club. Hope this is of some assistance. We are currently on passage to Townsville as part of our jaunt up the east coast of Australia. We are anchored in Upstart Bay at the moment and will be getting up somewhat early to head for Magnetic Island tomorrow. A short 66 NM trip.

Thankyou ozsailor.

Heading in the opposite direction.

At TI waiting for the next blast of easterlies to moderate , and to hopefully watch the grand final. The afl one that is ,which people around these parts don't seem very excited about.

The Thugby is a different story though.

Depending on what provisions you need you may be able to get everything on Magnetic Island. There is also a ferry that goes between MI and TV, though it docks on MI in the harbor not Horseshoe Bay.

Anchoring in Townsville

I believe I saw boat anchored in Townsville but I haven't myself.

Best bet is to anchor off Magnetic Island or go to the Marina at Nelly Bay on the S side of the island. I was there a couple of years ago and the marina was cheap.
If you anchor in Horseshoe Bay on the N side of the island there are facilities on shore, shops restaurant etc., and a bus to the other side of the island.

There is a ferry from Nelly Bay to Townsville.

Unless you need to go to Townsville particularly, Magnetic is the more popular stopover.
