Re: Charter in Whitsundays after Debbie

here's a drone video of Shute Harbour. The red and blue striped boats are bare boats. Nemo is (was!) a bare boat.

Re: Charter in Whitsundays after Debbie

couldn't find the newspaper article reporting sunsails fleet missing 32 of their 34 / hopefully they are now all accounted for

At the port of Shute Harbour, 10 kilometers (6 miles) east of Airlie Beach, the storm tossed around 30 vessels onto the rocks, Whitsundays Regional Council Mayor Andrew Willcox said.

Thank you for your discussion and insights. We are definitely going to make a go at chartering in the Whitsundays this June. Thanks again.

I will take advantage of Tigers and Jetstars Direct cheap flight to Proserpine during May and August. Added bonus apart from the amazing reef and great snorkling will be its Whale season. I doubt if anybody told them not to come because Debbie done Airlie.Cumberland Charter Yauchts are up and running again from Airlie Able Point.

Re: Charter in Whitsundays after Debbie

Visited Airlie beach on Sunday. Most businesses had just got power back on.

The cleanup of downed trees was well underway. The biggest impact is the tempory loss of the green tropical look having been replaced by a brownish no leaves look. Some trees were just starting to put out new leaves.

I was surprised how well structures managed the cyclone with very little structural damage. seems the building codes and previous cyclones mean most buildings are structurally sound.

I was surprised by how well Able Point and Port of Airlie weathered the cyclone considering the intensity. Both as well as Mackay Marina had some wrecked fingers where the were vunerable to swells. Some vessels sunk in the marina but the majority of vessels escaped intact. Schute Harbour suffered most damage and vessel loss.

Seems an improvement at Airlie and Schingly beaches from past cyclones and blows.

Re: Charter in Whitsundays after Debbie

Schute Harbour terminal virtually wiped out.

WRAY jetty survived well.

Good to see the Backpackers on Arlie Beach. Does their presence mean the accommodation is back in operation?

Re: Charter in Whitsundays after Debbie

more lost vessels at Schute Harbour

I general I was surprised how well the area handled the cyclone. A lot less damage to the infrastructure than expected. There seemed the majority of buildings kept their roofs with most damage from falling trees. Seemed to be less vessels lost than in past as well.

Area is essentially up and running now and certainly by Easter. Airlie lagoon swimming pool will be out for a month with damage whilst Daydreen Island which was due for a revamp will be closed for nearly a year to upgrade according to today's local press.

Cheers

Thanks for posting all the pics.

I guess the flocks of flying cats must have landed further inshore?
