This is SOOOO WRONG.

Their original natural habitat has changed. Pretending that it hasn't and you can stop culling a population and they will magically reach a happy equilibrium that people can accept is unrealistic.

If people don't accept it, it doesn't matter if the species survives or what the ecological effects are. If people are worried about their kids getting eaten (reality or not), the answer will be made for you.

Managing them is what avoids the ecological mess and it avoids the knee jerk reactions.

Re: Crocodile assassination

I dive on my boat and clean the bottom here in the Clarence River... Northern NSW, even though it's fresh water. We have bull sharks who can live in fresh or salt water and now maybe crocs in a few years. The fresh water stays above the salt water. Good that I'll be dead by then anyway, even if not eaten.

You have wild boar too

Someone should introduce BBQs to Australia, strikes me as a great way to solve two problems. I am still working on the spider one, but having lived in Hong Kong I remember the locals do have some odd eating tastes so perhaps hairy Oz spiders deep fried could become a delicacy. That or put one spider in a bottle of strong liquor and sell it to teenagers.

Re: Crocodile assassination

considering the cost of the census and determining if same sex marriage is OK, I'm surprised that there has been a count of the 24,000,000 wild pigs. That's around one pig per Aussie, and I've never seen a wild pig. Wild Aussies... plenty of sightings!

I think feral is the word you are looking for, Jim, in both cases....

Meanwhile I don't think I could run as fast or as far as a hungry croc. Top of a car would be more of a challenge to me than the croc....

Up a tree? I recall an attack in Qland some years back... ate one fisherman... tree-ed (sp) the remaining 2 and had been sitting under the tree waiting ... and waiting.. and waiting...

I think they were up there for several days before anyone noticed.......

Crocodile Assassination? You can no more assassinate a crocodile than you can "murder" any other animal.

Haha, yeah I don't know why we haven't thought of it!

A few of my ex-army friends are right into pig and roo shooting.

Not sure about eating spiders, though ..

I'm afraid so. The Dept of Primary Industries is concerned with these things because they're destroying fences, ripping up farmland, destroying crops etc

That number is a few years old too

A philosophical observation, but not terribly useful to the discussion which concerns an actual threat to human lives in an increasing area in Australia.

would you be happier if Ann had titled the thread "crocodile culling?" She's a moderator, and has the power to make the change if it is important.

Re: Crocodile assassination

Ann would have titled the thread "culling sex crazed crocs" if she could.

And why hasn't anyone mentioned drop bears or hoop snakes?

Oh... hang on...

So far as crocs, removing them from a population zone isn't going to destroy the environment, it's already ecologically destroyed by the nature of being influenced by over-population. From polluted waters to overfishing to ruined coral, city areas may look OK to the layman but are totally imbalanced. If we're going to dump sewage in the water along with caffeine and anti-depressants, might as well kill the local crocs. It's for the children.

Pete-
If you tell the Thai tourists "free all you can catch & eat spider on the barbie!" they'll come down and solve that problem for you.

"Fundamental diff between sharks and crocs.... sharks can't chase me down the street...."
Right, but someone apparently hasn't been watching the Crocnado documentaries on the SyFy channel.

Actually you don't have to, you just have to run a little faster than the guy running along side you.
