Does anyone sail to China?

I went to China last year, and since my trip I have paid closer attention, and I just haven't noticed any talk of China on the forum. Does anyone sail there?

Re: Does anyone sail to China?

I too have been curious about this. From what I've read around the internet, it is very hard to get the paperwork and authorization required to enter China on a pleasure vessel. Almost all of their system revolves around commercial/industrial interests and doesn't take into account things like sailboats. (Of course this is all just second hand word of internet).

But I would also be very interested in hearing stories of people that were able to do it or were stopped for some reason.

What is Taiwan cruising like? I have recently been there on business and saw some areas on maps and tourist guides that looked like it might be interesting. Like the island group slightly west of the main island. Said it was good for diving.

Re: Does anyone sail to China?

I have heard on this forum that it is very expensive to sail in China. Every port is a hassle and expensive to check in/out of. Its on here somewhere.

There is some information on noonsite. It seems to be very expensive. Living in China for several years, I was never tempted to go cruising here. Can not remember, i have seen any attractive coastline, except maybe Hainan in the South.

Re: Does anyone sail to China?

I'm in china now, and talking with locals, even locals run into BIG hassles with paperwork, if you just drop anchor off a nice cove, the navy patrol boats passing by often stop and sniff around and ask lots of questions about why you aren't in harbour, where are your fishing papers, why aren't you a commercial fishermen since you're on a boat.

Not really worth it unless you have good contacts in the right places and can just hand them a phone and watch them straighten up and start going "Yes Sir, No Sir, of course Sir!"

On the river with a rowboat it is a different matter, but offshoare is strictly for the fishers.

friends of mine stopped briefly in china last year on their way to japan, check in and out plus agent cost around $2000 dollars, they had to anchor out in an open roadstead, with all the cargo ships, plus they were not allowed to use their own dinghy to get ashore only, harbour water taxi service .

Re: Does anyone sail to China?

you'll just have to go HK, Taiwan, Japan without touching down at the mainland ports.

Why would you want to after all the previous posts nothing has changed there. It is not a very welcoming place to go.

Re: Does anyone sail to China?

I recommend Taiwan as a better place to visit. Kenting in the south is beautiful with reefs and is less polluted, eastern Taiwan has some beautiful places - Hualien is a good stop to provision prior to Okinawa and there is Is a beautiful mountain rock national park with awesome views.

Taiwan is also more welcoming. And has a great sample of regional foods from all over china as opposed to just one region in china. Chinese coastal port cities tend to e industrial sites with awful pollution.

I recall a couple I met who told me of very high fees, but also said it was incredible.
