Hamilton Island Marina / Resort

Howdy all,

First up this is not me being a corporate shill etc. I'm not affiliated with hamilton island in anyway just figured that a good deed deserves some props.

So...

I'm a cruiser currently at the whitsundays and living on a 35 mono. Cyclone seasons is currently here and you might have heard of a couple we had recently down here.
So as cyclone Yasi bore down on the coast I decided to take safe harbour at the marina just in case it veered south like Anthony did. Despite getting there after the marina staff had been evacuated they let me tie up anyways (after calling ahead to make sure before they left).

After that a couple of staff members came down from I guess the hotel who then informed me and a few other boaties that they were evacuating the boats and we'd all be given a free night at the hotel.

Well actually one free night turned into 3 free nights and a discount on an extended stay at less then half price.

So just thought i'd post up as a kudos too hamilton island for going above and beyond the call of duty in regards to cyclones and boaties.

ps:- So many thanks to any hamilton island staff reading this as well as much recommendations for anyone thinking of staying there.

Thats really awesome Troy. I remember when you were giving us a Blow by Blow (no pun intended) run down as Yasi approached- the free accom, the food and drinks they brought you all. God knows how many yachties I have told your story too. Good news travels too

Cheers

Heh sup Oz, yep also free food and drinks + emergency supplies. I actually didn't even realise I was getting a discount on the extra few nights (stayed a bit longer to say thanks for the free nights) then woops. Turns out it was a heck of a lot more then what I was paying at the front desk so thought i'd post here too help spread the good word (of the good deeds) as I'd run out of money to spend there ^^.

They turned us away in Cyclone Hamish and we went to Gurnare inlet.

So its good to hear their attitude has changed.

at having to sit out Hamish.

Guess I got lucky, there was actually a fair few empty berths for Yasi. That or everyone was scared to be up here for cyclone season this year. Which in retrospect is probably a good idea ^^.

How did your boat come out of it, any major damage?

None at all really, only damage to boat was losing a big tub of honey onto the sofa during anthony a few days before. Though I was anchored out for that one.

All media do every year.

How often have you heard/read: "Its going to be a long cold winter" or "Its going to be a loong hot summer"?
We decided that the journo's think to do this aftert eh first cold or hot day as the season changes.... and for cyclones after the first humid one
