Holbourne Island

Hi guys/girls

I'm looking for any info regarding Holbourne Island, Whitsundays area.
I've seen it described as the' Bermuda triangle' of Queensland so might be best to steer clear.

Anybody used it as an overnight anchorage?

Cheers

Out of interest, why are they called Holbourne ? I know of the island of Foula, west of the Shetlands, that were owned by the Holbourn family...... This family name being my family name. So to me to see islands with the same name but with an extra 'e' is interesting

Re: Holbourne Island

Not easy to find much information. We will be sailing through the area in a couple of months and were interested in Holbourne. It is just outside the sailing area of the Whitsunday sailing guide and all I have read says, "sheltered reef anchorage on south-west". And, of course the fun stories about disappearing ships.
But it does sound like it's not visited that often, so maybe it's a good stop.

Re: Holbourne Island

Dave - Absolutely no idea, sorry.
Some info here http://www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/managing...roved-2011.pdf

Jim - We're interested in it as an overnight anchorage as it would appear to give you a good angle to make Cape Bowling in the SEs (the only other safe anchorage between Bowen and Townsville).

Agree though, stories of disappearing ships would make for a sleepless night.
