I have never qualified this, but there is a sneaky suspicion that Boatie might be on to something....

The programmed morons think they're reasonable thinking folks, there lies the problem :-)

The problem I find with this statement is the assumption that "programmed morons" are always the other person- that the one who makes that statement is somehow supremely aloof and immune from subjective judgements. If one is "programmed" then objectivity is lost, who is to say the one calling the other a "progammed moron" is not themselves programmed- just programmed differently?

My other difficulty is just how do you define "a hate rant"? Simply because one has an opposing point of view? I don't think calling people "programmed morons" is either a particularly helpful or loving comment is it gentle folks?

Sure, nothing to do with cruising- but then wasn't the statement I quoted in the same boat? Of course no one has named names it is mere innuendo, but the unwritten reality is that we all know what is intended in this statement and who it is about. Let me leave off now and you can all return to your smug objectivity.

Re: Kidnapped sailor Jurgen Kantner

Back to the real subject, there's only 2 days left on the deadline. Very sad.

I searched and haven't found any updates in the last 9 days, except the following two quotes caught my eye:

"According to the military, the Abu Sayyaf Group, is currently holding 27 local and foreign hostages."

"The German couple had been previously abducted by Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden and held for 52 days in 2008."

That second statement makes you think.

Re: Kidnapped sailor Jurgen Kantner

My general lifetime observations is - the more armed anything one sees the less safer a place is. If businesses, individuals or the whole groups feel the need for extensive and visible armed protection there are usually good reasons for it. This also applies in real estate - if a local liquor store or CVS has an armed guard it is not a very safe neighborhood to look for a house or an apartment. Same with either US or foreign areas. Now of course it doesn't mean it is so unsafe as to prevent one from being there, just less safe than other similarly looking neighborhoods which do not have such extensive or visible armed presence.

My heart goes out to Jurgen and hope he comes out of it OK.

Re: Kidnapped sailor Jurgen Kantner

It it true that this same German couple was kidnapped by the Somalis previously? If so then it seems that their personal risk levels were much higher than the norm, and perhaps too high.

Correct, but we (since I agree) are determining the cause by observing the effect. I suppose carrying concealed firearms would mask the cause.

High risk places are still that, and if one survives an event it does not prevent another event.

My hopes and wishes for a good outcome apply to all of the hostages.

Yes, they had an unpleasant visit to Somalia in 2008: Islamist militants kill German sailor and abduct elderly husband in southern Philippines | The Independent
