Route to Mackay?

Several months ago I queried on this forum about possible routes to Mackay from Noumea and was told to use the Hydrographer's Passage. Looking at the charts it appears that entrance via the Capricorn Channel is more appealing. Plus, that route is at least 50 NM shorter.

So the question to anyone with personal experience: Which is better marked and the better route to take -- Hydrographer's Passage or Capricorn Channel?

Thanks,

Judy
