Albany sailing

I'll be in Albany NY area in a few weeks and I'm looking to do a little sailing up that way. Is there anyone willing to take on a newbie for a evening or afternoon sail? I've seen a few charters closer to NYC, but it's quite pricy for this greenhorn.

Re: Albany sailing

A few years ago I was really looking for sailing lessons on the Hudson. I eventually realized that sailing on the Hudson isn't as popular as other places in NY mostly because the strong tidal currents make for getting to and from your destination in a slow sailboat pretty time consuming.

However, if you're willing to drive south a bit I did go out with Tivoli sailing. He's got a 28ft sailboat and takes people out for day lessons. Nice guy and it was cheap for a day sail. We motored down to Kingston with the current, had lunch, waited for the current to shift, and sailed back to Saugerties with the opposite current with us. I'd call him and ask what he'd charge. I really enjoyed it as a beginner.

Thank you! I just looked them up and looks like great place to look into. It's too bad the ocean is a ways from Albany, probably lot more options there.

Sure thing. In my experience, Long Island sound actually is the place to go. Lots of sailboat friendly towns and harbors. I have never sailed on Lake Ontario.

Have fun and be safe.

Re: Albany sailing

I wonder what options there might be to drive a bit further to Connecticut or RI?

Re: Albany sailing

I think Newport is only 3 hours away roughly. I'd really like a little more sail then fighting with the Hudson. I'll have to look more along those lines.
