It's his boat, it's his trip. He's entitled to not HAVE to be accepting and accommodating of people's political diversity. I have ZERO problem with people's choice of religious beliefs. But I sure don't want an evangelical quoting the bible and praising their lord all day either. It's his right to not have to listen to someone's opinion they disagree with and politely bite his tongue. That is not my idea of a vacation.

His boat, his rules. Otherwise what is his other option. "Welcome aboard, keep your opinions to yourself".

Got your drift, what about independents?
I make a point not to belong to any political party and vote based on my assessment of candidates. Every election I have mixed voted across parties to the dismay of my republican and democratic friends.

Maybe you could write a contract with specifics: no religion, no politics, no ???, etc; and impose fines when the rule is broken?

We were on a cruise excursion to catalina island Dominican Republic. It's raining so we're all stuffed in the ferry on one level. One guy says let's start a chant & yells something political. Another guy threatened to to knock him out.

Initially as typed no, but when I saw what the spelling corrector changed it to I thought it made for an interesting lateral perspective, so I left it alone.

What about Canadians? we can't be democrats nor republicans.

BTW, in the British navy there were three subjects one couldn't discuss in the wardroom: politics, religion and the ladies.

This is why they had such a great navy!

Kudos to OP for braving the political element in his post; after all his boat his rules as I suspect we all acknowledge. I'll always respect someone's position if I'm treated the same. I'm trying hard these days to remember that we're all sailors first here at CF.

Re: Bahamas Cruise

All I can say is be prepared to talk politics for the whole month. What other reason would he give when he said you have to be a Democrat politically. In my opinion that’s 100% racism and stereotyping. If any other political group was to say that that’s exactly what the Democrats would say racism they do it every day!!! WOW it now in the sailing community we’re supposed to be laid-back and enjoy.

Re: Bahamas Cruise

There are two issues that bother me in this situation. The first one is that there is no desire to communicate with someone who has different opinions, how one expects other to change their opinion when he makes sure not to hear them other side.
The second issue is what kind of preferences we will see in future posts, no Jews, no blacks, once we opened the door, we can't predict where it will go.
Very sad.

Lots of people feel there is no need to listen to opposing viewpoints since they already know everything! Based on that, everyone else is wrong, so why waste time listening? This goes for a LOT of people regardless of their base beliefs . . .
