Re: Bahamas Cruise

Hello, That sounds like a great trip. I already have signed up at the Sea School to get my STCW certification/Eng1 at the end February. If you head out on March 2nd, I can be there. I have sailed around the Abaco Islands a bunch of times. I love the Bahamas! I'm a great chef.
Call if you would like to talk. Eileen 484-793-5066

Re: Bahamas Cruise

Interestingly I have been seeing this much more from the leftists in my daily interactions as of late - complete intolerance of the “other side.” It’s not only political party they won’t tolerate, it’s basically if you’re not “all in” on all of their beliefs then you are persona non grata.

They praise diversity of color or gender or sexuality but the last thing they want is diversity of opinion. Very bizarre. Guess they want a rainbow colored echo chamber?

Re: Bahamas Cruise

I recently responded to someone who only wanted a Liberal crew . Even though I’m a Conservative I didn’t bring up politics and we were a great match and had a great trip.
You can have friends with different views.
Just keep your views to yourself. If everyone did that it would be a better country.

Easy to get along with and a democrat, how the hell can you use those words in one sentence and expect to be taken seriously... It sounds more like a punch line to a bad joke.

Stick to sailing, fun in the sun and captain’s hour. And if they start talking politics leave them in your wake. [emoji4]

Re: Bahamas Cruise

Help this newbie understand, how is this not, at best, tacitly sanctioning bigotry? (Merriam Webster: "especially : a person who hates or refuses to accept the members of a particular group...")

Why not be 100% real and say; "intolerant (bigot) of people holding certain political ideas?" ... plus or minus: "... I'm respectfully asking for you to, pretty please, be equally intolerant (bigot) of me.?"

Re: Bahamas Cruise

I think the OP might have expressed his concerns more acceptably, but the truth is that USA politics have become so bitter that it can make co-habitation of a small space for a lengthy time miserable. I have sometimes been uncomfortable listening to people even when I agree with their views. Too strident or too frequent, and it becomes annoying. I have a good friend with opposing views, and we've never made each other uncomfortable. Sometimes we discuss politics, but neither of us tries to 'win points', especially in non-political discussions. Sailing, and especially extended cruising, is about relaxation and enjoyment, as permitted by the weather and boat hardware status. So maybe a suitable way to look at this situation is:
1. OP tends towards liberal. Everyone is entitled to their own views, right, and should not be criticized for having them?
2. Does not want to hear strident political views, or have political views become part of unrelated discussions. We've all experienced people who find a way to insert their political views into almost any conversation. I find that tiresome whether I agree with their views or not.
3. OP is more easily annoyed by strident conservative political views.

When I consider crew for my boat, a big part of the selection and decision process is whether I expect to enjoy their company. For me, that's more important than sailing skills or experience. A person's political views can be part of the decision, but certainly not the only part. I suggest we give the OP a break. Anyone who finds his criteria objectionable doesn't have to sail with him, but I don't think he deserves to be attacked and berated. It's unfortunate that American politics have reached such a low point, but he's responding to that reality, not creating it.

Can you be bigoted against bigots? Interesting question for philosophers.
