Re: Circumnavigation

A two year circumnavigation in a 20 footer seems ambitious to say the least.

Re: Circumnavigation

Really?

You are going to attempt a circumnavigation with an inexperienced unknown crew?

All on a little 20' sailboat!

Quite the fantasy.......

Re: Circumnavigation

The boat is up to going RTW.
It would be a bit cramped for 2.
After 2mo on passage the crew won’t be experienced but they won’t exactly be inexperienced either.
2yr is the only part of this that I don’t see being possible, the boat is just too short and under-canvassed to do it in 2yr. 3. Would be significantly better. 4 would be almost reasonable.

Re: Circumnavigation

bulldogsd, I hope your voyage goes well. If you don't mind, later send me your AIS# to keep a tab on your route.

Re: Circumnavigation

I've been watching a guy cross Atlantic twice on a Contessa 26 and he ended up keeled over and on the receiving end of rogue waves. I'd be right up for it in anything 30ft + but wish you all the best in achieving your goal. It is brave and ambitious.

Re: Circumnavigation

For what? People have done ocean passages on Flickas before.

I am curious as to water provision, the standard 20gal tank for two persons won't last for the leg to the Marqueasas for example so either a water maker is needed or extra tankage which is going to put the boat deeper in the water.
From what I understand these boats are not the best sailers and I would say a 3 - 4 kts = 72nm days will be the average.
So 3000nm = 41 days minimum.. providing conditions are perfect.

Re: Circumnavigation

Most boats taken cruising are short on tankage.

Water is easy:
A katadyn manual water maker to produce water on the way. Builds muscles too. You just have to pump for an hour to get 2 pints.

About provisioning:
Fishing an a chance to dig into the those personal blubber-reserves.

And if there's no wind. they can add a skulling oar to speed up things. Better than any gym.

Don't be so negative with your numbers! As if your experience counted in this dream-project.

True.. but most are large enough to fit a water maker without losing valuable storage space.. even if they limit themselves to packets of dry noodles for food to save space they'll still need the water to mix them with..
At 2 litres/p/day that's 44gallons just for drinking.
And let's face it.. most are folks boats are twice the size.. its all very well saying these things, it's something else to actually sail a 20ftr across an ocean.. the first 3000nm (Pacific) is rain free after that one can maybe pick up a few gallons a day from passing squalls if your lucky and know how.
