Wait until he sails the Bay and ocean for a few months on that little boat then he can talk sailing on the outside to the Bahamas with a bit more understanding

Take the boat offshore and establish some procedures. Take a competent crewmember (captain) in order to "learn" how to manage procedures in different sea states. Then have crew join to fill in voids in deficiencies.
For instance, my specialty is heavy sea state and keeping crew fed. Plus, electrical and propulsion trouble shooting.

Hire what you lack. Blowing 40 and losing systems, what will you need? Diesel filters clogged, batteries below 12volts, jib sheets are fouled, and main sheets are hard to the wind. What do you do? Talent on board is priceless. I just did this in the race to Mexico. Prepare for the worst and enjoy the experience.
