Re: Expenses Paid+ flights & bonuses-Spain to Australia

Well I just found out that CargoMaster can have the boat from Spain to Australia in 43 days!

Certainly if a container ship can do it in that time we can get there in a 40’ sailboat. Or maybe the OP meant the boat would be deck cargo on one of these ships and the crew’s job is to watch the sailboat aboard the ship? OOCL have a ship scheduled from Barcelona on April 23, maybe we can make that one? It’s only a 39 day schedule, so we get three days of cruising in Moreton Bay before we finish the delivery. I'm in.

Unsure how he expects anyone in Australia to get Federal Government approval to exit the country to collect a boat. Very, very unlikely I would have thought.

Container ships generally travel around 22-24 knots (or 18 to 20 knots if "slow steaming")

Given that a "40ft 2003 Bavaria Yacht Cruiser" will be lucky to average 1/3 of that, you are looking at around 130 days or 18-19 weeks

I particularly like the concept that there will only be two crew, but you’ll have lots of time off to do your own thing!

Things to do in your “free” time:
Sleep
Eat
Fix something that has broken
Send a message home saying that you’ll be longer than expected
Repeat...

I read it and assumed he missed a 0 of the end of most of the figures. I looked at moving a boat from Europe to Oz and it wasn’t cheap.

Not at all..... I asked permission to get out so as to recover property stranded overseas... ie a boat.
Had a permit within 8 hours.
Just tick the 'essential travel box' and not the 'fun in the sun' box.

Mind you they probably thought... 'mid seventies..south america... let him go then he won't be bothering us anymore...'

Ping old boy getting a visa is no problem, us colonials are well known for spreading disease amongst the natives.
Poppycock about the canal. You all forget the Bav 40 foils come with roller skates. So at Panama you find the nearest boat ramp and the local cabbie will tow you over the hump. If he keeps the meter running that's $50 US tops.
I had my batman drop BrianaH a line today asking if he really is that "Brian"the champion of pocket billiards.

You're all so negative! The time-frame must be realistic with some buffer. Just check out this list of sailors doing the trip under sail: https://www.vendeeglobe.org/en/news/...t-cape-leeuwin
They only took between 35 and 50 days from France to Cape Leewin. Add a little for the final approach to Australia and you're set. I can't be that hard.

And those even didn't need much of a crew, although one of them picked up a guest on the way. Perhaps the old man felt a little lonely

For a six week passage? That covers 11,000 nautical miles (absolute minimum) - which equates to a non-stop speed of 11 knots in a ~20-year-old production 40-foot monohull?

I'm having a hard time seeing how all that comes together, but good luck regardless.
Let's very generously say you have $1000 left after expenses.

2 people (with a professional skill set) working 12hr/day 7 days/week for 6 weeks that's 1008 hours...so you would be making a little less than $1/hr.

That assumes no pre or post trip work and no overlap where both are working simultaneously...your having difficulty managing a sail in a squall...too bad it's my free time.

Of course, that's aussie dollars, so about $0.75/hr in USD.

Really though, is it considered work if it's sailing? The thing we all love to do?

Some people here seem to pay for the privilege of sailing on someone else's boat.

12hr per day, 7 days per week, all conditions on a schedule and responsible if something breaks...

...yeah, that's work.
