ALASKA TO MEXICO 2023
Howdy Sailors from Ketchikan Alaska!

THE BOAT
SV Melodaire is a 1966 Spencer 42 Sloop
(has the old name in this photo)

She has in the last 4 years had an extensive refit that included a complete replacement of all of her systems, electrical plumbing through hulls etc.

As well her engine was almost new when I bought the boat and has less than 3000 hours. The stuffing box has was replaced when the shaft and prop were pulled and serviced along with a new cutlass bearing last year along with new bottom paint and barrier coat.

The Spencer 42 is an exceptionally fine sailing boat with this one in particular having a 8,000lb ballast keel (normally 7,000) which makes her incredibly sure footed and stable and she is incredibly sea kindly with good all around manners, especially for a full keel boat!

All who sail aboard her fall absolutely in love with her! Especially when the weather is terrible being able to sit inside the hard dodger with the Alaska Bulkhead closed and the diesel heater running, it makes sailing a joy even on the less than stellar days!

Seeking crew for any portion or all of the following journey!

Willing to train noobs, willing to untrain experienced sailors!

Preferably looking for women as my current crew consists of 3 women who will be joining at different parts of the trip, and it will make the berthing situation more comfortable, however, if you are a man and can pass their vibe check, we will consider you!

⚠ note: I am also a 100% disabled veteran and am perfectly happy to take disabled crew/passengers sailing. If you are disabled please let me know what your needs are when you message me and I will do my best accommodate you.

Tattoos and Piercings ok

Crew must be:

✅ Clean
✅ Responsible
✅ Honest
✅ Dependable
USA or Canadian citizen or have a B1/B2 visa valid through January 2024.

Absolutely no:

🚫 Smoking

🚫 Criminal records (including theft/DUI)
🚫 Heavy drinkers
🚫 Political extremists from either side!

🍺 Alcohol:
It is ok if you are a moderate drinker, however aboard the boat we practice 24 hours bottle to throttle, meaning you cannot stand a watch if you've had alcohol in the previous 24 hours.

🦺 Safety:
There is absolutely no jumping from the boat to the dock, we use spring lines and boat hooks when mooring to ensure low stress safe easy handling of the boat on and off the dock.

Underway in calm conditions any time crew leaves the cockpit they are required to have on a life jacket and have someone observing them from the cockpit. In rough conditions we wear life jackets at all times when not in the cabin.

I have filled the crew positions for the Alaska - Washington portion of this journey.

Looking for someone to hop onboard from Port Townsend Washington - San Francisco at a minimum, preferably on to Los Angeles in September, we will departing directly from the wooden boat show.

We are planning on doing a lot of hiking, surfing, swimming and of course sailing, I often will put in a 16 hour day on the boat going from one place to the next rather than taking short hops.

Older folks tend to have a hard time keeping up with those of us who are a bit more athletic.
