Looking for some experience

Hello all.

I'm looking for some experience trying to break into the yachting captain/delivery world.

A bit about me. I work on towboats pushing barges on the Mississippi River and ICW. 10 years experience. Current schedule is 28 days on 14 off. I have a valid passport and TWIC. Credentials include 100t master, 200t mate, tankerman PIC, OS, FH, wiper, apprentice mate (steersman) of towing vessels. Also current on first aid/CPR. I'm familiar with maintenance and trouble shooting of various engines ranging from small outboards up to 3500hp diesels. That guy that actually does the preventive maintenance? That's me. I'm also the guy that comes up with the crazy ideas to make it work until we can get it fixed right. Yes I can pass a drug test. No I don't have any felonies.

In case it matters to you I'm a 44yo straight white divorced male with 2 kids in college.

What I'm looking for is someone to take me under their wing as a deckhand or pilot and show me the ropes of yachting. I'd be willing to work for free for awhile while I learn... just cover travel/expenses.

If this sounds like something you may be interested in or could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. Thanks for your time.

Re: Looking for some experience

if you want paid work you really want to put your name and cv with a yacht crew agency
on top of your really good qualifications you will need stcw94 ,eng1, and various other endorsements on your commercial licence.

the benefits are are hugh working on superyachts,an engineer or chef can earn as much as most captains on commercial vessels

I’d agree with that. A skipper who could double as engineer would do well.

Re: Looking for some experience

Exactly what Atol said.

But dont sell yourself short as an unpaid volunteer.

I was a SuperYacht Captain project manager/Owners representative on new build Feadships for many years and I would be wary of anyone Not wanting to be paid for their skills

Driving/Fixing the boat is the easy part.

Guest relationship/ world wide management and water sport expertise are the key components along with attention to detail, that makes for a professional Superyacht officer or captain/engineer
Good luck in your search!
