No Experience Capable Individual

So, as the title says, no experience in the marine world, but I am an electronics engineer and have a great deal of knowledge on how things work. I have taken an 8hr. safety course from a civil organization in Houston. I also have been involved in self study, preferred.
I would like to volunteer my time in a local project, and get onto waters around Houston aboard a sailboat.
I almost purchased a 1980 Cape Dory 27', but there where too many hiccups with the deal. Only having been in the area since January I did not have the confidence to get the vessel over to Hilman's dry dock.
I have a desire to sail and would like to offer my abilities to those willing to teach, explain, and get me on the water. Thank you!

Too bad you are in Texas, if you were on the Chesapeake, I'd get you sailing...

I am in Boston for an interview early July! I guess that is still like being in TX.
