Panama canal

Hi,
I will be travelling through Panama in Aug, and would be great to be able to join a boat as line handler.

Either if anyone here would need my assistance, or if you can provide tips on how to find a boat in Panama. Guess shelter bay marina is the best place to start looking?

I do have sailing experience, but more important I'm experienced with boats and ropes.

BR Johan

Re: Panama canal

Ask on the Panama cruisers Facebook group. Shelter bay marina is also a good option

Re: Panama canal

Peak season for small boat transits (in either direction) is March-April trailing into June.

August is well into hurricane season and most small boats in the region have already settled into a safe haven.

Its not impossible for you to get a line handler position on a boat now, but there are much fewer opportunities.

Re: Panama canal

There was a small cafe/convenience store on the Pacific side near the dinghy dock with a bulletin board on which I advertised with success for line handlers. Didn't have phone service, so I hung out at appointed times, and a couple backpackers showed up.
You might find out where cruisers hang out--somewhere near a dinghy dock--and advertise that you'll stop by at X time.
It's a quick bus ride across the ithsmus, so you can work from both sides to increase your chances.

Re: Panama canal

You can also try the website for Panama Posse. All liveaboards than transit that area are on there.
