A real cruiser leaves a clean wake and does not knowingly violate the local laws. If you think you are above Mexican law and willing to expose your crew to the Mexican penal system, good luck finding crew. Make sure that you also bring a gun with you

Re: s. cal to mexico in december, 2018

Tony,

You remind me of the guy that walks into a crowded room of friendly people you do not know and within 10 minutes, all in the room agree 100% that you are an ass. And you Tony, get a big grin on your face because you like being an ass.

I have made the sail from MDR down to Mexico more than 2 dozen times. On my own vessels, (all larger than yours) and on friends boats as Captain ranging from 35 feet up to 92 feet. So I know the drill. I now live in Mexico but fly back to the Marina Del Rey area often as the company I own is based there. So... I guess I would be a perfect candidate.

But with your attitude, no thank you.

But hey, if you would like to stop into my marina when heading through Mexico, I will buy you a beer after I pick you up off the floor and dust you off, and hand you a towel to wipe your newly bloodied nose.

The people on this site are a great group. The moderators, like JPA Cate, give their time and hard earned expertise for no pay whatsoever. Just the joy of helping and sharing with other sailors. But you Tony, you like being an ass don't you?

Now you can muster up a real scorcher of a retort.

Re: s. cal to mexico in december, 2018

Tony,
Im headed to Isla Guadalupe next week, singlehanded. I care deeply about the natural environment and the destinations I choose to visit, like Guadalupe and the Revillagigedo. That is why I follow the requirements and get an annual biosphere passport plus the additional step of individual permission for Guadalupe at the regional CONANP office in Ensenada. That way, an underfunded agency like CONANP/SEMARNAT gets the resources needed to support programs like the eradication of introduced species(goats on Guadalupe) and habitat restoration. Please hit me up if you’d like help following the process; I’d like to see another sailor lose the entitled attitude and care enough to engage, learn, and maybe actually give something back, however small. This will get you started:

Re: s. cal to mexico in december, 2018

I would think that any prudent person would or should be very wary of associating with a vessel owner who openly brags about an intention to flaunt international customs and immigration laws. From time to time most of us have heard bad stories about Mexican jails. This proposition has a very disconcerting vibe to it. Perhaps the moderators should take action, I do not think it belongs here!

If you are sailing from Southern California to La Paz(not stopping at Isla Guadalupe), is it mandatory you stop in Ensenada to clear?

When sailing sailing from La Paz to Southern California what is the procedure or options to check out of Mexico?

Hi, Augi,

We have not been in Mexico for some while, and i think your best bet would be either online or by a phone call to the consulate in San Diego. All the entry/exit ports have changed recently, and may still be changing. The USA's attitude towards Mexico is partly responsible for it. But it IS in a state of flux, and with so much border unpleasantness, I really do think it is wise to dot the "i"'s and cross the "t"'s. In the old days, one was welcome to leave from San Diego and check in at Cabo. However, at present, one may not be able to check in there, but one can in Ensenada.

@tony:

It is easy to get into name calling when you want to invalidate someone else's opinion. It is not an exceptionally honest tactic.

As it happens, I am a long term cruiser, and I gave up counting sea miles after 150,000. I have visited a number of foreign nations, and do seriously think cruisers should follow the laws of the nations they visit. To do otherwise only drops all the guys who follow you into the muck.

Sometimes it is hard to get the right information, but as visitors, we should be seen to make the effort. Such effort has nothing whatsoever to do with how qualified a sailor might be...or not, it is just a question of doing one's homework.

i only need one sailor, but will take a couple if available. i can accommodate up to two persons in my sayulita airbnb for one week after the delivery, OR pay the return airfare for ONE PERSON from puerto vallarta to los angeles.
my wife and i are currently in MDR, but will be sailing to catalina, and other points of interest in s. cal., before my wife returns to mexico, and i begin sailing south.
it is possible to pick up crew at any of the s. cal. ports.
thanks

Hi Tony,

I like your sense of adventure. I am planning a similar cruise.

I found this on the internet(see link).

http://www.marinadelapaz.com/pdf/BoatingInMexico.pdf

The information at the above link is from the Mexican Authorities as of February 2018 about what to when entering Mexico by private boat. It looks like a lot can be done by email before you leave to eliminate any issues.

I suggest you do as described at the link above before you leave and ask the Mexican authorities based on your itinerary what they want you to do.

I am just guessing but I think if you do what is described at the link above before you leave, have all the documentation on board, and tell the Mexican authorities what your itinerary is you will not have to check in until you get to Cabo or La Paz since Isla Guadelupe does not have an immigration office. But I am just guessing. Confirm with the Mexican Authorities and see if your itinerary can be logged into their system since you do not plan to check in until Cabo or La Paz.

Re: s. cal to mexico in december, 2018

Latitude 38 just hosted the Baja Haha with 170 boats. On the annual Baja Haha, the flotilla leaves San Diego and stops in Turtle Bay and another stop before meeting up in Cabo. Cabo San Lucas does have a Port Captain and that is where most will check into MX.

Isla Guadalupe is near Turtle Bay so it would be the same as Turtle Bay. No Port Captain, no check in.

When we did the Baja Haha, we anchored out of Cabo and checked in La Paz which many of the cruisers did.

I do know in the Sea of Cortez, there are federal agents who come out to check to see if you purchased a park pass for the islands.

Latitude 38 has a First Time Cruiser to Mexico PDF you can download and get some good information.
