Skipper needed for transfer

Hi,
I am new to CruisersForum and hope I am posting this classified in the correct section? I am in the progress of purchasing a boat and want to hire a skipper to transport the boat from Punta Gorda, FL to Brooklyn NY. If someone is interested in this keen and extensive trip, which will be partially with me aboard, kindly contact me.

Best
Mathias

Welcome to CF!

It might be a good idea to give some sort of indication of the type of boat

Re: Skipper needed for transfer

You may want to check the cost of transporting the boat overland by truck as well. A 31' boat is easily hauled out and loaded on a lowboy trailer. Might need escorts in some states, and maybe NY is a deal-killer, but it's worth checking out.

I bought a 38' boat in Tampa and had it hauled and shipped to an inland lake in Alabama. Then 2 years later, hauled it back out and trucked it down to Mobile, AL.

A few years earlier, I had bought a 27' Catalina sailboat in Punta Gorda, FL, had a custom trailer built; rented a Ford F-250 from Enterprise; and drove down and hauled it back to Alabama myself.

The guy I sold that boat to drove down from Alberta, Canada and drove it back across county.

A 31' boat is at the high end of being trailerable, but it's doable. For a pro with an 18-wheeler, it's a piece of cake.

Now, if you just want the adventure of sailing it back home, then by all means, sail it back.

The plan to hire a delivery captain is sound. Often these guys will also make sure you understand the boat and will give you a lot insight that might otherwise take a long time to acquire on your own. They might even save you big money by teaching you to avoid possible costly mistakes. It's kind of a double win as you'll know your boat will arrive safely and you'll get some valuable training in the meantime.

Re: Skipper needed for transfer

Hi,
first of all, Thank you for your feedback and insights. Unfortunately, the seller pulled out this morning, so this one is not an option anymore. However, I am looking at other oats this week - this time a little bit closer than Florida.

Even though some of you recommended transporting the boat by truck, I prefer to boat it up with an experienced skipper to learn how to handle the boat - as I am not an experienced sailor:-)

I will get back to all who contacted me via PM seperately.

Best
Mathias
