Re: Tips on getting crew opportunites

Hi, what is your final destination after sailing up the east coast of Oz?

Re: Tips on getting crew opportunites

Dockhead offers some good advice
However I would add that getting some certifications goes a long way.
I would further recommend that you get RYA over anything else
as internationally held in higher regard.
I crew around as much as I want and have my pick from time to time.
I will be sailing 3 out of the next 6 months on two different
continents.
The key here is to separate yourself out.
Every skipper I have ever met prefers crew with experience
and a solid base level of knowledge.
Cert up to RYA Coastal/ Tidal will do the trick.
Teach yourself navigation, radio protocol,
Lights, shapes & sounds.
Do not equate crewing with cheap sailing.
I always pay my own transportation ( except when doing a delivery)
and volunteer to contribute a reasonable amount to the boat kitty.
Lastly, join Oceancrewlink.com
a paid site but well worth the 5 bucks a month
Cheers
Neil

Re: Tips on getting crew opportunites

Old dead thread, but man I just gotta ask...is the issue that you're not getting INVITED or that you just can't seem to find crew opportunities that work with your schedule / preferences / restrictions?

Because I mean, on this thread you were invited to sail twice. By richbeck and DMF Sailing. And both times you said it wouldn't work.

Maybe it's not that you're not getting invites, you're just not getting invites that work for you. That's not COVID related, or anything else.

Consider opening up your schedule, if this is such a priority. If things are narrow for you, you'll surely land fewer opportunities.

As a delivery guy, the only thing I can add is to let folks know if you are vax’d and boosted.

This is not politics, simple facts. It is a PITA to get cleared if someone is not vax’d.
