15 - 20 year old resin... Still good?

When going through my shop the other day, I came across a 2-gallon kit of West System epoxy (apparently they used to make a 1:1 ratio mix!). I'm almost certain it dates back to before we moved out of my childhood home in 2006.

The hardener was trash, it had turned a foggy red color that just didn't look right. But the resin is as clear as a mountain stream! I wonder if I buy some new West System hardener, do you think the resin work just fine? I hate to throw out perfectly good stuff, but I also don't want any problems. My wooden boat repairs are lousy enough without the help of bad epoxy!

I have used West system resins where the hardner has turned color without any problems, and other epoxy systems with the same symptoms without problems.
You could always do a couple of test panels to determine if it cures fully.

But if you are really concerned, just trash it and get fresh......it’s not like it’s a 55 gallon drum.

As Doug suggests, you could try a small sample to see if it kicks. "The Gougeon Brothers on Boat Construction" doesn't mention the effects of aging on resin. Perhaps the best advice would be to call West Systems and ask them: 866-937-8797
