1919 Herreshoff S-Boat Project

1919 Herreshoff S-Boat Reconstruction - YouTube!

A complete reconstruction of a 90-year-old Herreshoff S-Boat. The boat is Hull Number 3 of the 98 wooden sailing craft built by Herreshoff from 1919 to 1941, and was recently purchased by a Rhode Island Herreshoff aficionado.

Shea and his crew of Bruce Cresser and Bradford Gove have their work cut out for them, as the boat is in pretty rough shape, having passed through several owners and several partial restorations over the years. Every piece of wood and hardware will be replaced, save for the ballast keel, but first the team needs to correct the damage caused by previous restoration work and improper layup, which twisted the hull out of alignment and caused the bottom to sag.

Re: 1919 Herreshoff S-Boat Project

I had the pleasure of sailing aboard Mokulele, an S-Boat built in Pearl Harbor before the attack. It was maintained by Shep Williams who passed away several years ago now. He invited me to sail several times while I was stationed at Pearl Harbor. He had sheethed it in polyester and it was a constant maintenance boat.

It performed so well that he rarely needed an engine and it sailed absolutely beautifully. The last I heard a couple of Army folks bought it and were maintaining it.

It had a sistership at Pearl Harbor that a fellow bought to restore but after the haulout he never got to it and it finally dried up, couldn't keep the rain out and it rotted away. A real shame. They have such a beautiful hull.

kind regards,
