1975 Mariner 19

I'm thinking about buying this boat for me and my 10 year old granddaughter. We plan on going out on Friday afternoon and sailing a while, then pull into a cove have dinner and camp for the night. Then we will get up and cook breakfast. If the wind isn't up we will crank up the motor and troll for crappie till the wind picks up. Then sail some more. The only thing is I don't know how to sail..I'll just have to remedy that.

Greetings and welcome aboard the CF, mb.
Sounds like a grand plan.

Take a look at a Catalina 22, or a 20 ft sailboat of any kind. Who is gonna put up the mast at the boat ramp ? And take it down and tie the mast on. Do that once or twice and you may never take the boat out again.... --Maybe you have your own boat dock ?? (I'm not just talking about you, it's just human nature).

Chrysler 22, you can sit at table, cook on Coleman stove. Porta potty, beds, strong built. And can use & tow to regular Campgrounds. Any 20ft sailboat you can do all the things said above. Usually sold with trailer & you can take to lake or river anywhere. 4hp to 10hp outboard.

MB, I have no doubt a Mariner 19 would carry you through learning and on to earning life long memories. This exact vessel, a1975 Mariner 19 did that for me 20 years ago starting my sailing adventures on the mighty Mississippi in Dubuque IA. You have a great plan no matter what vessel you choose. Fair winds, Mike

Re: 1975 Mariner 19

I bought the Mariner 19 yesterday. She seems in really good shape with a really nice galvanized trailer, probably worth what I gave for the rig. Rigging is in good shape and sails good. Fiberglass above average for this old a boat. Now I just have to learn how to sail.. Never been in on a sailboat. What size and style anchor do yall recommend. Beaver Lake is a deep rocky lake with mud bottoms also. What about adding a roller furling jib?

Re: 1975 Mariner 19

I had a Mariner for a few years.
Used mostly to single hand on a lake.
Good boat to learn on.
I'd add a reef point to the main.
Mine had a furler which made life a bit simpler but really not needed.
D&R Marine in MA has parts
There is also a dedicated group of Mariner owners
at usmariner.org that is gonna be a big help to you.
Lots of good how to's and maintenance & repair info.
You should also add screens to cover the cockpit drains
they are a pain in the butt to clear if they get stuffed
by leaves and such. I used a bathroom plunger.
PM me if you need specific info
Cheers
Neil

That sounds like an awesome plan for you and your granddaughter. Congratulations on your purchase! As far as an anchor goes, we used a Danforth anchor in Colorado. Looking at your boat though you can probably anchor to the shore rather than the lake bottom. With such a shallow draft you can keep it simple and just have fun.

Re: 1975 Mariner 19

Congrats on the Mariner, I'm sure she will treat you well. My sister and her husband had one and despite their antics the boat always brought them home. The hull is basically a Rhodes 19 with a different deck. The boat also met the now defunct MORC racing organisation safety rules so it is self bailing and self righting.

Re: 1975 Mariner 19

MB,
We sail a 1985 SanJuan21. Similar to the Mariner except higher combing so the swing keel is below the cockpit sole instead of keel trunk actual running through the middle of the cockpit on the Mariner. Good SJ support group. Think the San Juan is a bit faster but both are good boats for your needs.
