Re: $30K or Less Sailboats

Thanks for opening this thread Who. Any idea why the original is closed again?

Re: $30K or Less Sailboats

I have no idea. This is at least the third time that I've noticed that the original thread has closed. Perhaps it's too big, too long or too old. If it doesn't re-open, I'll just keep posting here.

Nothing wrong with it , just some strange glitch. I’ll check it.
….. should be open now.

Re: $30K or Less Sailboats

While I am enjoying this post . I do find it goes counter to what most experienced sailers and boats owners say ! “ YOU CANT AFFORD TO BUY A CHEAP BOAT “ if you are in fact on a small , or tight budget . Often this is the very reason these boats are on the market once again !

While is is exciting to dream of restoring many of these boats , and as a person who has renovated a number of homes for resale, unlike houses their is ... NO....money in boat restoration for the most of us !

This fact has caused me a huge amount of struggle , because I love to restore things by nature and renovate . However this seems to be follly when it comes to the boating world.
I cant help , but look at the majority of these boats and see money pits !

I do think however there are those rare occasion when due to special circumstances, someone can get a steal , or amazing deal . However truthfully it seems more being in the right place at the right time , or knowing the right persons at the right moment.

I have no doubt that in the right hands some of these boat would be worth purchasing, however for the vast majority of us dreaming , it would a huge mistake ! This is what I keep having to remind myself as a frugal renovator by nature.

Just wanted to toss that out there , having said that it’s fun to dream of getting a steal to brag about , so I am here to stay !

I've purchased a few "cheap" boats and although they do cost money to get going, I'm willing to put in some sweat equity which makes it quite a bit less expensive than purchasing a newer boat.

I don't know if you follow some of the YouTube sailing videos, but it seems that a pretty good percentage of the people making the videos are sailing on those cheap fixer-upper boats.

That being said, purchasing one of those fixer-uppers should never be considered an investment like you would find in real estate. It's almost impossible to "flip" a sailboat.

Re: $30K or Less Sailboats

I own one of those cheap boats... as long as I don't let the cosmetics bother me too much, she is beautiful in all other regards! Often when folks get a boat, they (naturally) want it to look beautiful. But what happens is, once you undertake cosmetic jobs, like painting and varnishing, they can really disable a boat for a long time, and render it nearly worthless during that time because few people want to buy a boat that is in pieces waiting to be painted. In my case my boat is structurally and mechanically fine, but she really needs a paint job and some wood work. As she is I can sail her and go places. There are boats out there like that, or close to it. If you can tolerate cosmetic problems, some deals will start to look better.
