Yes, aluminum mast etc should be done. What year and make is the engine? My guess is it is way overpriced. Most long term owners do that until reality sets in. I wouldn't worry about the blue gel coat personally.... it would be way down the list...
A 42ft. boat that has a good builder and designer reputation is overpriced at $35K? I think it's a perfect buy.
Nick...I'd jump on this one. You're always going to find something wrong with a used boat. Also, by posting the link makes others aware of a deal...just saying.

I am a truck driver, in my Semi, and I have my dog with me.

Isn't a situation where I can just go hop a plane or I would.

OK just to let everyone know there is intact one issue that I know of on the spencer that I will not address myself it will be up to the new owner to do it. The water maker needs maintance. All the parts are here including the factory manual should take about 4 hours to complete. Its one of those things that a boat owner would want to do themselves to learn the equipment anyway.

Well one thing's for sure, it's rare to see a boat so well discussed prior to even viewing it! Sure wish you all luck on this. Nice to see a classic continue to be so well considered!

If I have learned anything from my time playing with cars it is that many of the older things are built much better than what we have avalible today.

Most car's built today are metallic paper mache, not real steel. You show me a 1966 GMC that is well taken care of, and I will show you a truck that will still be here after the 2016 GMC built today has been sold for scrap!

It seems to me this is a well built boat, I am seeing what appears to be solid wood, not veneers, that tells me this boat could very well out last me.

And thus the rationale for the Plastic Classics group! If you get this boat you'll be inducted as an honorary member!

Re: 42' Spencer - possible livaboard/project boat?

If I didn't have a boat that I have refitted, I would seriously consider grandpa's boat. Nice long range cruising boat and also raced well. He had several friends that had sisterships that I also sailed on in my youth. Another friend that had a Spencer 53 that went to S Pacific and back to Seattle. The hard dodger was made by Spencer by special request from owners. I notice the mast has been painted. He always had it meticously varnished....I have no interest in the sale. Just some opinions and reminescence...
