Re: 45 foot 1970's IOR racer stored in a barn for 25 to 30 years

Hi Ric

I would love to see the pictures of Mystery, but when using the CF app, or for that matter (for me at least) the website, but with a tablet, you are not able to see the album.
On the App, albums are not available....

Ugh....

Hi Pieter,

Sorry about that. With out being logged in, viewing as a visitor, I can open the album photos on both my windows laptop and my Apple Ipad.

I will post some photos directly in the thread.

Pics of MYSTERY in the horse pasture outside of the barn just before she left for Bayfield. The white hulled EP 46 is the boat that was on USHiP in 2017.

Fantasia 46 from an early 1970's Sail magazine. MYSTERY's boom is about four feet shorter than the Fantasia's boom. But they both appear to have the same size foretriangle as scaled from the drawing.

HI Soundsail,

Could you please post the month and year of the SAIL magazine that the Fantasia 46 article is in. I would like to try to find and purchase a copy of the magazine at one of the used book resellers.

Cheers, Ric

I'll check in again. Canada Customs will have a record of the boat entering the country and the trucking company who hauled it. The keel would have been removed for transport but should have been trucked with the boat. A caveat there might be that the trucker held it for payment. If a new one was planned to be poured, Marrs Metal would know of the old one which would have been planned to be re-cycled. A new one-off keel is expensive. It's more likely someone thought about cutting 4 ft off the bottom and adding a bulb or something.
I need to see better pictures of the deck, the hull/deck fastening and under the floorboards. Identify the steering system and show me the chain plates. All of those will be distinct characteristics. Show me the winch package.

The low deck house and slanted windows look very familiar to me, but I can't place what it is. Almost looks like a Lancer or.... Viewed from aft that boat looks very narrow for how long it is...? It doesn't appear to be a Fantasia.

I am curious to see how big the keel actually is. It look like she carries a lot of sail and has a little keel? Good find and she looks worthy of you attention.

I know you have concerns about draft where you plan to go, but I hope you'll put the keel back on that she was originally designed to have. She looks like she could really fly.

Don, I know exactly what you mean. Etchell's design. Probably quite handy. She's going to wind up being the equivalent of a one-off, maximized for fast passages. It seems a shame to compromise that. However, Ric has a reasonable plan to make her suitable for his use, and we probably shouldn't mess with his head about it, no matter our prejudices. Almost everything you do to a fast boat to make it a comfortable cruising boat adds weight and lessens fastness.

Hi Russel2 Ric Would you have a chance of jogging his memory in conversation? Perhaps a particular event he might recall; a maker's mark on a remaining old sail; talking to him while you work through the boat; possible locations of builders marks on beams or bulkheads; any special serial numbers; spare part unique to the boat; a radio callsign?

Wasn't the boat registered in some jurisdiction that would have a list under the previous owner's name? How do you buy (and register for yourself!) a boat without any paperwork?

Russel2
The EP46 I saw in Mystic was a light blue or blue grey. That was in 91 or 92, I think.
The boat was on a trailer, keel on and mast lashed to trailer, not on deck. I used to wander over and gaze at her during breaks. The boat I saw in the SORC was most certainly the same one. It was 1972. The year of the Ranger 37s and the boat I sailed on (a big custom job) was beaten handily by the Rangers. What I remember about the EP46 is that she hobby-horsed a lot in light air and slop. Just came to a stop. I also recall Hood on his one tonner with his new "flanker" sailing up from behind us all.

I think the EP46 is an attractive design but it never took off. A lot of boats built during that era never made it into the IOR era successfully. The Ranger 37s sure did!

It was a fun time to be a yacht crew, boat yard boy and have an interest in yacht design.

Re: 45 foot 1970's IOR racer stored in a barn for 25 to 30 years

Hello All,

Here is a summary of what I have learned about MYSTERY with a few questions.

During the 1960's and 1970's Everett Pearson gave the sailboats he built, model names like the TRITON.

The FANTASIA was commissioned by Everett Pearson. The FANTASIA was designed by Skip Etchells and built in the Tillotson-Pearson plant by Neil Tillotson and Everett Pearson

The FANTASIA was called an Etchells-Pearson 46, or an EP 46, or an Etchells 46

The first EP 46 was built to be Everett Pearson's personal sailboat boat and was named FANTASIA as per the model name.

It appears that Everett Pearson's EP 46, named FANTASIA, might have been built in late 1971 or early 1972. I have found her listed as having sailed in the Newport–Bermuda Race in June of 1972. It is unknown if she placed or finished the race.

Do any forum members remember seeing Everett Pearson's EP 46 named FANTASIA? It was probably slipped in the Boston area. Did you sail on Everett Pearson's boat?. Did you crew on it during races? Docked next to it? Do you remember what the hull color was?

A light blue/blue grey EP 46 sailed in the 72 SORC. Was this Everett Pearson's boat or a different one?

The next time the name FANTASIA shows up is on a boat sailing in the 1974 SORC. A boat named FANTASIA was sailing in Class C. She placed 2nd in the third race and then placed 1st in the sixth race of the 1974 SORC. However I do not know if this Everett Pearson's boat, or another boat with the same name Fantasia? Did anybody sail in this race series and know about this boat?

In about 1991 or 1992 a light blue/blue grey EP 46 next shows up on a trailer parked in Mystic, Connecticut. The keel is on her and the mast is on the trailer. Does anyone have any knowledge of this boat? Is it Everett Pearson's boat? What became of it?

In 2017, Steve A. asked for a quote on uShip about transporting an EP 46 from Alameda, California to Chicago, Illinois. This EP 46 had a white hull with red or maroon boot stripe and dark bottom paint. Was this the light blue/blue grey boat relocated and repainted? Did you know this boat in California? Did it get to Chicago and you know of it on Lake Michigan?

There was probably only a small number of EP 46's built in the Tillotson-Pearson custom shop.

The following is the current summary of information I have on the EP 46's seen. The first one is Everett Pearson's boat FANTASIA. A second light blue/blue grey boat that might have been FANTASIA. A white boat that might have been FANTASIA, years later, painted white. And I have the EP 46 that I found in the barn.

So at this point at least two EP 46's were built, Everett Pearson's FANTASIA and my boat that I have named MYSTERY. There is a possible third EP 46 painted light blue/blue grey boat that might have actually been FANTASIA. And there is an other white EP 46 in California years later that could also be a repainted FANTASIA.

So I am sure that there was at least two EP 46's built. But maybe there was a total of three or four built.

I am just interested in knowing some of the history of the EP 46's if possible.

If you have sailed on any of the above mentioned EP 46's or have any additional knowledge about them, or any others that may have been built, please post it here for all to see. Thank you!

Cheers,

Ric Shemerluk
