Re: Ahoy Carbineer 46 Owners

Hi Mike,
OK but is it the original? in about 1999 I looked at buying Voyager at Southport YC. She had a fiendishly complicated engine room with layshafts with clutches and belt take-offs all over the place! I thought the engine was Mercedes. At about the same time I looked at a Carbineer in Rose Bay which was a pilot house build, as opposed to the normal deck saloon. I definitely remember that one as having a Mercedes. Rumdoodle (1984 I think) was built with a 6 cylinder Ford Lehman. Replaced with 150hp Cummins about 2004.
Anyway, in the end in 1999 I gave up and ordered the Buizen 48.

Re: Ahoy Carbineer 46 Owners

I haven't spoken to Mike Lasky for a while . The current owner of Voyager has had to do a lot of work on the Volvo & it certainly looks like it's been in there since new. I somehow ended up with Voyagers spinnaker with Mikes name on the sail bag .

Re: Ahoy Carbineer 46 Owners

Well my last post was back in November 2018 since then we have had covid & it rained almost non stop for 2 years here resulting in huge floods on the Richmond River in NSW where our Carbineer is penned. We have only recently restarted our refit . Our galley has been rebuilt with new floor but retained the teak & holley. Our main engine is up & running again. The rigger was here yesterday to discuss removing the masts & our generator is coming out for a rebuild.
I have returned to work fly in fly out so I have 2 weeks a month to work full time on the boat. I hope all the other Carbineers are doing well.

Getting ready to pull the masts ,replace the rigging & rebuild the hydraulic in mast furling. Every fitting is being removed new paint under & any corrosion controlled.

Re: Ahoy Carbineer 46 Owners

Hello Carbineer owners and knowledgeable ones.

I am looking at a 1979 last one made by AH Moody - Narooma.

And an Ozzy built one from 1989 made out of aluminum

I can’t get info on these boats. But I do love them.

Does anyone have any specs on an aluminum hull 46?

Chris moody surveyed the 79 and found some blistering on the hull but nothing to be concerned of. - I will repair this.

The Australian built alloy one appears to be custom made in Sydney. It was under construction at the same time my Carbineer was being built in Melbourne at the Lasky yard. I looked at the add on Yacht world. She has a high set mizzen boom that allows a sunshade below but doesn't have hydraulic in mast furling. Very nice fit out with a chart table in the rear cabin . Good size engine 170 hp same as my Yanmar but a few hours up on it . If there's no corrosion it looks like a good boat a good survey report required get the surveyor to get into all those hard to see nooks under the engine etc with an endoscope.
Narooma is a beautiful boat very nicely detailed engine room a genuine Moody Carbineer . She has been looked after well . If it was me I wouldn't go past Narooma .

Thank you so much. I am desperate for more info about these boats.
Yes I have called the broker in UK, got his secretary. I am hoping Mark I believe his name is, will call me back. We fell in love with this model.

So little data about it. Its numbers make me believe it’s not fast under sail. But I’ve read reports here that they are actually fairly quick.

Any forums or groups dedicated to these boats that clearly were what inspired Bill Dixon.

Yes they sail exceptionally well we often get 9 knots under sail on the gps. We use an asymmetric spinnaker down wind with a genoa poled out & we run a mizzen staysail like a mini spinnaker off the mizzenmast. Heading north up the East Cost of Australia in the trades she fairly flies along. They go well to windward as well . I can email videos etc if you pm your email. I tried to download here but too large.

Re: Ahoy Carbineer 46 Owners

So I received the survey on Narooma.

Definitely some things that need to be replaced and she needs to spend a good bit of time on the hard to accomplish them.

Excellent structure still there, but I need to call some yards in the area to see what repair to hull, deck, pilot house, heads, generator, thru hole come valves, etc would be.

I have the survey of that boat. As does the broker.

It needs some welds, and there was a leak at some point in the aft cabin.

Gorgeous boat.

Re: Ahoy Carbineer 46 Owners

Katrina III is on the slip at Swan Bay which is 40 k up the river from Ballina . Our masts are off & are now ready for painting . The hull is being blasted back to gelcoat with new epoxy primer & anti foul to be applied. She looks good under the water with no signs of any osmosis. Our in mast furling has been removed & repaired with new bushings & after painting the masts will be reassembled with all new rigging. We are contemplating painting the topsides as well while she is up in the shed. After that a rebuild of the generator & some cosmetic interior varnish. Oh & a couple of new sails.
