Re: Ahoy Carbineer 46 Owners

Is that York brothers old slipway? If so, I’ve been to a few launching parties at that, they built some fairly large and impressive boats there… until the bridge was built.

Yes it's Yorks . I had to drop my masts to get up here the bridges are too low even the new Pacific Hwy bridge is only 15 m clearance . Without the bridges the slipway would be a thriving buisness, but there are ways of getting around it . It's easy enough to drop masts in Ballina I used Universal Cranes & Cookie came down from the Gold Coast . I am re rigging & re painting my masts anyway.

We are now 6 months into our major refit going slowly. I went back to work hopefully my generator is now out for rebuild. The gearbox back in & fuel tanks resealed. When I left 3 weeks ago the masts were undercoated . The new rigging is all made up waiting. The hull is in perfect condition with no osmosis at all. We have sand blasted her back to gelcoat & repainted with 2 coats of epoxy.

Still moving along slowly . We have removed the old Onan 6.5 kva generator & split the alternator from the Kubota engine. The engine is now getting rebuilt. The alternator is in good condition but will have the windings re varnished & checked over. I sand blasted & painted lots of brackets & pieces today. Tomorrow I'm sanding & painting the box.

Re: Ahoy Carbineer 46 Owners

Hi, I purchased a UK built Carbineer 44 in February and I’m loving getting to know the old girl. She was built in 1971 originally named Mutineer and now Tyrita. I’m looking for some help to remove the cutlass bearing and also the rudder as it is made of wood and the bottom bearing has sunk into some soft timber at the bottom. I guess the Aussie built boats have very different arrangements for rudder and cutlass bearing so hoping to find some help from owners of the UK built versions.

The rudder has a bronze shell bearing at the bottom and once the bolts are removed the rudder needs to move aft to clear the bracket on the skeg. The rudder shaft splits inside the hull and there is no exit in the cockpit for the top part of the shaft, just a top bearing bolted to the underside of the deck head. To split the shaft the rudder needs to drop so I have unbolted the top bearing giving me some movement but not sure if this is a good idea as the rudder stuffing box may stop the shaft from moving sufficiently. I can’t remove the top of the stuffing box or the stuffing as the coupling is too far down the shaft.

Any words of wisdom would be appreciated. Boat is located in Dartmouth UK.

I will try to post some pics but I’ve not had much luck doing that on this site as running from an iPad.

Thanks Andy

Re: Ahoy Carbineer 46 Owners

Hi Andy
The Australian built Carbineers have a different set up. The rudders are fiberglass over wood . The lower bearing in mine was nylon but I replaced it with an engineered plastic. The pin is stainless steel with a shoe that removes completely so the rudder can be lowered. I Will try & post some pics. I can recommend joining the Moody owners association there is a wealth of knowledge advice & a monthly magazine.
