Alpa 42

Hi All, looking at an Alpa 42 and considering buying it. My main concern is with regards to performance and how well they sail. Does anyone have any experience sailing these boats. Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: Alpa 42

According to Sailboatdata only eight were built, so finding owners will not be easy. With a Disp/length ratio over 200 and a SA/disp less than 14, these would not seem to be stellar performers. The long keel and skegged rudder, along with the solid prop shaft structure, add a lot of wetted surface to what is a pretty heavy boat. Even though the design is by Sparkman & Stephens, sailing in less than 15 knots of breeze will likely be a frustrating experience.

Thanks, that was my worry. Looks like there were 67 built, and there was a revised rig design which the boat I’m looking at has. Hopefully I can get hold of someone with first had experience.

Re: Alpa 42

I have vessel 39 as a Sloop version and it is one if the safest boat I have ever sailed.
This is an oceanic boat. If you want a fast performer for a race it js not. If you wish to be safe around the world in ANY conditions. This is it. Even below 15 knots.
Do you have the know how and the sails to move 12 tons with 5 knots??
