Re: Aluminium hull teak deck

Replacing the teak is going to be a major job and what would you replace it with? metal decks are a nightmare anywhere hot an teak Washed with seawater has a wonderful cooling effect, almost like A/C without power as the evaporation from wet wood sucks heat out of the cabin. The deck does not look that badly warn, just a tatty finish so if it is restorable keep it, if you dont like the boat find another one rather than change this one.

What about filling the fastener pukas with aircraft flush rivets?? Caulk the rivets before inserting and you have a one step water tight fix that you could paint over with nonskid.

In any case it's a big job that would turn me away from this boat. Don't understand northern Europeans love of teak decks. Why build in an eventual major nightmare as teak decks leak if screwed and eventually need replacing at great expense.

Now there's a good idea. I like it, simple and fast!

Thank you

If you remove the teak, you will mostly find corrosion underneath. I just redid my deck, it was not Teak as it adds too much weight. However, I did resurface the deck removed most of the old failed paint, repainted it as recommended for aluminium boat (8 coats in all) and stuck down a synthetic non-slip matting. I had some hole I just covered with these material, as it comes with a 3M glue sticky back which seals a few men made holes in my deck, I did not want to weld them up. See photos the finish is wonderful. And far cheaper, less weight and nice to walk on. If you want to do a good job you need to make templates from Mylar clear film when cut out and stick down the non-slip matting, for a good finish it is imperative to draw out the lines on the deck draw out & make a template ovelay, then cut out and stick down it is a two-person job.

Whatever you do if you buy the boat, it is a very big job!

I think in the back of my mind I just always wanted to do it really, so I did it on one boat!
How is the Treadmaster? We're thinking of doing the same and wondering if it is nice underfoot, easy to install, lasts well and stays nice, easy to clean, etc. etc.

Re: Aluminium hull teak deck

...had plenty of corrosion under the treadmaster too. If there is still a choice: run!

Re: Aluminium hull teak deck

Could you just weld aluminium chequer plate over the whole deck? It would look pretty different.
Cheers

Re: Aluminium hull teak deck

& btw: consider the not unconsiderable (sic!) likelyhood of your keel corroding (eventually through) from the inside out.

True. Depending on how you lay it down, the Kiwigrip does grip extremely well when its wet (when it counts). Other "nonskids" are great when the dry, but not that good/slippery when wet.
Our Kiwigrip isn't so bad on the feet, but on your hands/knees it will toughen up your knees quickly.
