Any Thoughts on the Cooper 416 ?

the cooper 416 seems to have just about everything i'm looking for in a boat. I haven't heard much about them though. i'm into distance sailing and am looking for a boat to take my family along for the journey...

Two hands on everything. No need for contortion or a third hand. Big roomy and dry never had the big green monster visit yet.Plus two steering stations. Most comfortable boat I have been on in my price range. Full access to engine and all electronics. Way cool. 500 km motor range with perkins 4-108. Easily singlehanded.

very nice boat.... lexan crash glass for the pilothouse. that's exactly what I was expecting for a mod. not a big deal, but probably necessary.
any other weak links?

Just the usual stuff about it being a hole in the water you throw your money in.

Re: any thoughts on cooper 416's?

Depends on what you mean by a weak link. There is some variation in layout but they were designed with comfortable coastal sailing in mind. They do that in spades.

I think most of the original ones were designed like mine with water storage on one side and diesel on the other. With both filled she lists towards the water. I've removed my holding tank and put a small water tank in which I fill from a water maker. I don't fill the port water tank and so it's not a problem for me.

I have the 4.154 in mine although most did come with the 4.108. The extra horses are nice in the strong local currents.

Personally I love the boat. With the 150 genoa I don't have to reef in 20 knots though a reef in the main means I don't have to wrestle with the helm. With the jib up it's a lot less work but unless the winds are strong I want more sail.

Re: Any Thoughts on the Cooper 416 ?

I am looking at a Cooper 416. Do you know if the hull is solid, airex cored, or balsa cored? What about the deck? Thanks.

This explains the weight! Thanks! If you are willing to share the three things you like most about the boat and the three things you like least about the boat I would really appreciate it.

Re: Any Thoughts on the Cooper 416 ?

The tanks aren't the same on all of them but on mine the water is on one side in one tank and the diesel is on the other. When the water is filled she lists. Access to the tanks is poors. The wiring runs are difficult to get at.

The space is fabulous, it's bright down below, large foredeck, she sails well and has a comfortable motion.

What speed can you maintain on a close haul in 10 knots of wind? What about 15 knots of wind? Thanks!
