I think the city of Wilmington is 15 miles from the Atlantic.

How close to the city can you find anchorages or docks where you can stay put for a while to make some cash?

Docks right in town. Don't know about making cash though.

Try Southport, NC at the mouth of the Cape Fear River. Plenty of marinas and there's sometimes work to be had on Bald Head Island if you have experience in the resort industry.
