Anyone know this kind of boat and rig

Spotted this on the hard in Anacortes, WA. Big mono hull pilot house, but I've never seen this rig before.

Anyone know this boat/rig. Carbon fiber mast for sure....no stays anywhere. That boom would rotate on the two part mast as you came off the wind....pulling the tack of the genoa out to windward. Only advantage I see to that is the head sail would never be covered as you sail down wind.

Others?

It's an Aerorig, a lot more efficient and easier to operate then a conventional rig. A lot less maintenance too. I am a rigger and can't understand why freestanding rigs are not the majority for cruising vessels.

Re: Anyone know this kind of boat and rig

It is from years ago and a few quite large boats were built with it in UK . I too used to rig for a living and could not understand the resistance it met on the market. Came to the conclusion that it was just too Logical and sensible to be ROMANTIC or acceptable in north America. It needed a red Tie and Girth! Ha!

No personal experience but had a long conversation with an Aerorig owner many years ago.

The boat was about a year old and the owner hated the thing. He said the mast whipped around and made him very nervous. He also said he was heading back to England to have it removed and replaced with a conventional, stayed rig.
