Re: Anyone use paddles before?

We race 21-footers in a reservoir where outboards are verbotten. Paddles do it for us when there is no wind. We don't have any interesting docking scenario to deal with when there is wind (no tight turns, currents, tides etc).

I also have an outboard, but I wanted the oar option as an experiment, and so far I really like them. I am not going to go very fast, but getting into and out of a slip is super easy and I can row in or out of the marina or anchorage as long as it is calm. You are welcome to have a look:

Very nifty looking. I may consider this as a backup alternative on my 28 footer. BTW how long are those oars?

Wow! For $700 you'd expect for it not to need any repairs.

Re: Anyone use paddles before?

I had a C&C25, so pretty similar in size and weight. I found I could "skull" with the rudder, without much fuss, and get the boat moving about 2 knots. Coming into a quiet anchorage, or marina, this was plenty, and it was so quiet...loved it.

I also regularly sailed on/off of anchorages, and sometimes docks, especially my home dock at Portsmouth Olympic Harbour.

You won't get enough power to overcome a current or any kind of wind against you, but there are plenty of times it worked absolutely great. Coming in with no motor is actually so much simpler, quieter, and more controlled than under engine.

If you have crew, a long pair of oars, located midships, would give more power...but you need crew for that.

BTW, "skulling" is just pumping the tiller/rudder back and forth in long smooth strokes.

Start with an expensive outboard, and treat it like sh*t. Thats what most people do...right?

Re: Anyone use paddles before?

If you just need a little boost to get you the last few hundred feet, consider adding a little 12v electric outboard (trolling motor). In calm conditions, it will push the boat easily, and its super quiet. If you only run it a few minutes, power won't be a big concern, especially if you are about to plug in at the dock anyway.

Mine are 11 footers. If you go too long it is harder to get the leverage on the pull or push since so much of the oar is outboard of the lock. The freeboard is the main limiting factor. Ideally the oars would be amidships, but it is not realistic nor necessary for them to work. BTW the oars could be able to help out for ruddering in case of rudder failure also.

Re: Anyone use paddles before?

My father used to scull a 36' on deck wooden sloop that weighed 15 tons net. It wasn't fast but in the well protected creek where the boat was kept it served well enough to get out and into the bay.

If you can't afford a used 5HP outboard, you probably can't afford to own and operate a boat. Boating is not an inexpensive hobby.

you can't sail out? if not, i'd recommend a sculling oar. sweeps work fine but need more space

11 ft oars, . I've got extra sets of 12 foot Carlisle oars, going to try this. The oar head flats, come off via a button. Shortening the OAL by 2 feet, to 10 ft.

Don, where do you row from, ? Forward or,aft in the cockpit.

I bought a motor, I may however keep oars as back ups.

For some of us it is a cheap way to live a good happy life. But then again I suppose you don't like doing things cheap or inexpensive . Ron you spend more on fuel in a single days cruise than I do in a whole year of cruising.
( in other words why are you so negative lately . ( just wondering )
