auto pilot

I have an Navico WP 4000
I installed it to the proper specs. and it is getting a full 12 volts however, when i power it up and dial it in as soon as i press set it turns the boat wildly back and fourth several times then i just quickly turn it off.
I have read it does take a minute or two to find the attitude of the boat,do i just need to give it a lot of sea way to make the adjustments.
the control head it mounted on the bulk head which is directly behind the the panal and all the wires for the boat. could this be the problem?
Thanks

Re: auto pilot

Look in the manual. There's probably a calibration procedure to go through. This lets the machine find North, basically.
