Bavaria 32 (2002)

Hi All,

I am about to have a survey done on a 2002 Bavaria 32 - which has been well looked after by the current owner.

Anyone got any experience of these boats / comments?

I currently have a Hurley 22 so this is my first 'proper' yacht with a budget of around 35k. I am planning on sailing UK South Coast / N France / Spain / Netherlands.... maybe in a few years taking her round to the Med.

Any advice / pearls of wisdom welcomed.

Bavaria good robust
in Italy and in the Mediterranean there are many
the boat is fine
I know women who have changed the sails of Dacron with technological sails, the boat is very strong and the wind tightens the angle of about 30 degrees

I hear some concerns about the build quality of Bavarian - was 2002 before they started to have their 'mass production' issues ?

Re: Bavaria 32 (2002)

I think the best period of Bavaria builds is between about 2000 and 2007. Very early ones were a bit flaky here and there. After the GFC almost everyone started desperately trying to save money any way they could. A 2002 might well have a lead keel, and you should get the engine checked out (could be a good model of Volvo Penta), and if you get an owner model rather than a charter one (which a 32 is likely to be), then a lightly-used one can be a very good buy indeed. Get a good survey to check the structure of the boat and that it's not been grounded (or at least, not grounded on rocks :-))

I'm guessing you've watched Sailing Britaly and Patrick Laine's videos, if not do watch them. The former does a lot of maintenance to his slightly earlier Bavaria and is a good repairman, the latter never seems to have a problem. Both are highly knowledgeable about engineering. Another channel to look at is Tino G, who has a similar boat to the one you're considering, and although his videos move slowly he does show in some detail a lot of the things that need doing on boats, and you'll learn a lot about the interior details. There are a number of other channels that let you see more details of the boats.

You'll want to know principally whether the standing rigging and sails have been replaced from new. They are now well past due for this to happen, and that'll really add up. If the survey checks out, I'd probably also hire a marine engineer to check over the engine given its age.

Tillsbury,

Great reply thank you! Ive not seen either of those channels so I will look them up. The boat is a 2002 private owner sailed gently around most of the Solent / South coast of the UK. Im hoping she's a good one

Im not planning on any outrageous trips across the Atlantic but I may want to take her round to the Med in the longer term.

Re: Bavaria 32 (2002)

Great compilation. I'm owning a 32 near Barcelona constructed on 2002 and previously charter and so far, happy. Some issues on the Volvo Penta 2020 motor exahust elbow... Is there anyone that knows where the two ways valve of the toilet is placed: it seems to me not accesible at all!

Re: Bavaria 32 (2002)

The exhaust elbow on those Volvos is almost a maintenance part. Not a difficult Diy job to replace
