I love my Hans Christian 33, but all of these boats built in Taiwan in the 1970's/80's are getting long in the tooth, and likely to need pretty extensive work. I'm currently doing exterior chainplates and coachroof teak deck replacement on mine.

I hear the canoe stern isn't ideal though? More cramped and causes things to be a lot more wet than modern designs?

Thanks for the extra links, interesting reading
You might change your mind about a canoe stern running before a following sea.

I think we all admire the look of a double ender or canoe stern. Lovely classics. On the other hand, I notice I don't see a dinghy in any of the photos posted above. That is probably not a coincidence. Of the several sailboats I have owned, my favorite had a step through transom which made boarding and unloading a dinghy while cruising very much easier - as well as allowing an aft stateroom and a roomy cockpit.

Re: Beautiful boats? (30-35 foot)

We'll cast a vote for the Cape Dory 31, a Carl Alberg design from the 80's.

And not just because we own one and live aboard it all summer in Maine. She's just a pretty boat to look at, as are most of the designs from that builder.

The hulls and rig age well enough to justify the costs of a major update and refit. Nice teak interiors and fairly wide for boats of that length/vintage. Very rugged keel/rudder design that, for some odd reason, is nearly immune to picking up trap warps. Medium displacement that sails well and looks lovely with the cutter rig. Large aft head is very convenient for wet foulies and for not having to sleep in the v-berth with your head next the noisy head.

The only problem with the 31 is that they are fairly rare as compared to the 30 and 33. Only 84 were built and they tend to sell quickly when one hits the market in decent shape.

PM if you'd like more info on this pretty little cruiser. Also check out capedory.org for info from other owners.

"OrionJim" posts often on this forum and has owned a 31 for about 12 years.

Cheers

My dinghy is a Portabote. No room for davits on a double-ender (not easily anyway).

Re: Beautiful boats? (30-35 foot)

L. Francis Herreshoff once wrote that when you are pulling away from your boat in your dinghy and you look up at your boat and if you don’t smile, then it’s the wrong boat for you.
Well, I have a Herreshoff Nereia, and I smile every damn time...
The message is , get the boat you love.

Re: Beautiful boats? (30-35 foot)

I second the comment above. I currently own a Valiant 32, which is a nice-looking double-ender. But as the result of a major refit of what was once a neglected garbage boat, she'll never be as pretty (teak interior, bronze hardware) as I'd wish to look at every day, unless I spend ridiculous amounts of unnecessary money. I am therefore looking to sell her and purchase something that will tickle my fancy every time. Looking at Pacific Seacraft Orion 27, Nor'Sea 27, Baba 30, and similarly well-built fancy-looking classic bluewater cruisers.

Future posters, feel free to include a few models under 30ft here so I don't have to open another thread

Re: Beautiful boats? (30-35 foot)

I’ve admired the Baba 30s from a distance. A boat that you may enjoy looking into is the Fisher motor sailing line up. I know they make one that’s 34’ and I owned a 37’ for a few years. I believe they also made a 30, though I may be mistaken. British made and can take on most any conditions Mother Nature may put in your path.
Is still my favorite boat I ever owned. Sold her about ten years ago to a doctor in Canada.

Second, the vote for Cape Dories, looks good and will get you anywhere you want to go and back. Alberg knew what he was doing.....and best of all they are practically free.

Thanks Dooglas for this. I would add that the double ender, canoe sterns, long counters, etc. make the MOB situation much more challenging. I know that swim platforms and sugar scoops are not as elegant and not as seaworthy, but I think the odds of my first mate getting me back on board with those latter designs is much, much more likely. Of course, rebuttal 1 will be to stay on board by clipping in, etc. But still, if I am in the water...

Re: Beautiful boats? (30-35 foot)

A list of beautiful boats, 30-35' range, should include the Bob Perry-designed, Ta Shing-built, Tashiba 31.
If you can stretch your parameters a bit, include her big sister the Tashiba 36.
