Best Advices. Please. A Novice Here.

Hi everyone! I hope everyone is doing great and staying safe.

I live in NYC and I am saving to buy a sailboat 30ft or less the thing is that I want to register it in Dominican Republic not in US. My question is what is the right steps to do this?

Plus I am thinking to take some sailing class for novices.

Thank you for your feedback and I completely new in this world of sailing.

If you look at the menu bar at the top of the page there is a menu that is labelled “Search”. It you type in a word or combination of words it will show you all the post in this forum containing those words.

I recommand you try this exciting feature of this forum.

Welcome to the forum, Lone sailor.

Do you have more specific questions? At this point you want to start learning to sail, good, and that I guess will include buying a boat in the NYC area as a trainer. Fine.

Taking a boat to the DR, or purchasing one there, is a whole different ball game. We don't know whether your dream is to sail there in an under 30 ft boat, doable but not recommended, or move there for a new life far different from NYC. We don't know whether you envision living aboard.

So, break this down into the question(s) that need to be answered now, and for which you could use some advice from others on the forum.

Good luck with your dream.

I am a US citizen who owned a UK registered boat. We had to get an annual US cruising certificate and leave and re-enter the US on a yearly basis...so you will need to be able to sail to Canada and back on an annual basis.

Now that I know more about your goals, and have seen the posts above, it sounds like a reasonable plan would be first, purchase a boat and learn to sail in NY, then sell it, move to DR, get resident status there, and buy a boat there. Having one foot in each country appears to create problems you don't want.

A two week sailing vacation in Canada each year is not such a terrible thing

Take sailing lessons, as others have said, then charter sailboats, join a sailboat club where you can get qualified to sail their sailboats or purchase a sailboat and sail with a hired sailor or friends who can teach you how to sail. Anyway, just did it!!
