Best Source for an Affordable New Sail ?

I have given up on the idea of repairing the old genoa on my Pearson 26 (rolling furl) and I am looking to find a new one. I have looked at Bacon's used sail inventory but it seems like it is to have a new one made. North sails quoted me at $950 (5oz. Dacron %150 genoa) which doesn't seem too bad.

Are there any other companies that make good sails at good prices?

Is it worth the extra money to get the luff tape put on it?
Is 5oz thick enough for a sail like this? I am located in NYC and I tend to cruise up and down the east coast with just a touch of offshore sailing.

Lots in Asia that are going to give you a better deal - try Rolly Tasker in Thailand, Neil Pryde, Lee Sails and HK Sails in Hong Kong.

I can't voche for the quality of the last, but the first three (especially Rolly and Neil Pryde) are excellent.

OC, your timing isn't very good. Sail makers the world over are probably rushed off there feet at the moment making sails for the summer. Any chance you could delay until the Autumn or early winter when their will be deals to be had if the US market is anything like the UK. Find yourself a boatshow and do the rounds playing of each of the manufacturers. Then find a local sailmaker or an agent local to you to measure the boat etc so you get the exact fit.

I would always fit a luff strip fitted to protect the sail from UV which is the big sail killer.

Meantime we have picked up a couple of bargins from e bay. Both sails turned out to be nearly new and at a fraction of the price. Their are lots of others but I really only look for sails in "mint" condition.

Should add, we need a new Genoa too, but will wait until the back end of the year. Meantime the e bay sails are effectively No 2's for when its windy rather than use a part rolled 140% and in emergency incase we blow the old genny out.
